I've also carried out a BB test on BT website and this is what the response
was...
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 5Mbps or greater.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL WBC broadband line rate of 7Mbps or greater.
The actual stable ADSL line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use. This rate may change over time, to ensure line stability is maintained.
What do you suggest. I have supposed upto 8mb which came with my mobile phone package. I'm only paying £5 for it but a little while ago I actually had a download speed of over 6mb and it's slowly but surely dropped to its current speed?
Ok people, I have now tested the other Orange bb account that I have at home. I have one in my room at work, the first post and as said another at home. I have performed the testinfo and here's the result...
As you can see there is a vast difference in attainable speed etc. So there seems to be a problem with the account/service at work? Any suggestions to what the problem could be? Mind you I've had quite a number of views but not one post in response to my original post?????
Consider whether your line is capable of a higher speed. If you are a long way from the exchange you may be obtaining your best speed. Check here and tell us what BT say about the speed you can get:

I had never had a problem with my download speeds until approx 1 month ago. Prior to this I was able to achieve a speed of 6.1 download when doing an online checker. I have just gone on the BT adsl checker again and this time it gave me this...
Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 1Mbps. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 2.5Mbps or greater.
Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a potential ADSL WBC broadband line rate of 3Mbps or greater.
This is a 50% reduction to when I posted the original thread!
I was onto Orange yesteday and they said they would carry out a line check. But my biggest question has to be, if I am paying for an upto 8mb download speed (I know not always possible to reach this), why am I only gonna get 1mb which ia way off the margin? Just had a quick look at the Orange website and particularly the page where they offer upgrades and they offer upto 8mb but reading further down the page this is what it says...
We've checked out your line and your current speed is 1Meg - this is the fastest speed it can support.
How can they offer 8mb when infact the fastest according to them is only 1mb? I take it this only affects Orange. If I were to cancel and go with another provider such as BT themselves or o2 (now Sky), would I get a better speed?
All ISP's go by the data provided by BT. The speeds on the checker are only estimated, and there can be fluctuations in the speed caused by many reasons. Sometimes the whole exchange is regraded by BT and the speeds for everyone on the exchange can go down, as was shown recently with the Chipping Sodbury exchange. In most cases the ISP is entirely in the hands of BT and can't change it. However you may have synching problems on your line which has caused the speed to drop, and as ADSL Max is rate adaptive it can leave your speed at a lot lower as it tries to synch at the highest stable rate. Sometimes when this happens you get what is called a "stuck profile", which may have been set at 1mb, that is one of the reasons the ISP's perform line tests. This isn't always picked and it may be worth asking them to check on this.
If the line and/or exchange has been intentionally downgraded by BT, you won't get any faster speed unless you switch to a provider that can supply ADSL2+ such as BE. You can change your package with Orange up to 3 times in any 12 month period, and if the speed can't be upgraded, it may be better to downgrade to the Starter package and save yourself some money. However regrading normally results in commencing a new 18 month contract.

The first is ADSL2+ which is an Orange system I should think download is around 1mb. ADSL_ATTENUATION=57.0 is very high so this appears to be problem.
There is a fault somewhere which could be yourside of the wiring. You know the line is capable of a good 6mb and this is shown also by your other connection.
We have seen on here that Orange may be happier for you to leave as opposed to trying to repair fault. You could move to another ISP and still have the same fault but if they are any good they will repair it within days.
Had a look at o2 (now Sky) this morning and according to them they can offer me their premium service which is upto 16mb?
Also puzzled by this...
If the line and/or exchange has been intentionally downgraded by BT, you won't get any faster speed unless you switch to a provider that can supply ADSL2+
I thought Orange was providing this according to my first post?
Ok, got call from Orange saying that they would carry out a line check and to get back to them in 72hrs. 72hrs passed and I called them. They state that the maximum they can now offer is 1mb! So I told them no probs please supply a MAC code so I can go with a proper bb supplier. I contacted o2 (now Sky) who said that my line could handle 20mb!!!! So have now gone with them on an upto 16mb contract. What are Orange doing??? Even now they are offering upto 8mb contracts knowing that they can't supply this speed. Like everyone else I can't believe how easy it was to say goodbye to them. Hi, I'd like to cancel. Ok, your MAC code will be with you in 3-5 days, thank you for calling Orange.

Thanks for update. Presumably Orange have a plan. I am sure that many customers will not realise that their speed has dropped and so Orange will be getting away with the reduction.
Freeserve were the market leaders - what is happening?
Other forums have posts saying that Orange BB is at last improving.
If this is true, considering the number of customers they've lost, their BB infrastructure is beginning to cope with the current size of the customer base.
Obviously, as in sinbrad's case, they are still pruning the customers on the less desirable contracts, i.e. those on cheap mobile+BB deals, those on <8Mb contracts etc etc so that they end up with all customers on home phone+BB contracts only.
Well, I am astonished that's the quickest Orange has ever been...
MAC code received in less than 6hrs!
Just for info I have at home a second BB package identical to the one I have had problems with and I have had no problems with download speeds . So it seems that it's not simply the case of inferior packages being pruned? That package is a mobile/BB deal as well. With Orange charging a higher tarrif and offering a low BB deal it sort of equals out
Other forums have posts saying that Orange BB is at last improving.
Does that mean with ADSL2+, when they have their customer base sorted out, we will see speeds up to 24mb offered?
Keith
If they can't even supply 2mb how can they offer upto 24mb even if the customer base is sorted. If the line according to Orange can't handle the speed then surely it's pure fantasy
