I've been using my Orange account for a few years now and have always used pop.orange.net / smtp.orange.net. Now over the last 18 or so months I've occasionally not been able to send emails due to issues similar to the ones described in the other threads on here.
However, I could always temporarily get around the issue by renewing my IP from my ISP. For some reason it would work with some and not others. Maybe they've black-listed an IP range? I dunno.... Anyway, I recently changed my ISP from Bulldog (Pipex) to o2 (now Sky) (Be) and have found that I am now completely unable to send emails.
I think this may well be coincidental however as I have created Outlook accounts on friends / relatives PC's that use various Broadband connections and none of them work so I don't think my new connection is to blame after all.
I don't have the exact Outlook error to hand at the moment but will add it later when I get home. btw, I've tried multiple email clients too.
I'd be interested to hear if oher peeps have had this issue. I'd phone Orange to report this but I get the feeling that the person on the other end would be clueless and probably blame my PC or connection...
It's not a DNS issue as the server will resolve to the above IP address. I'm also unable to ping this server but this may be the default behavior for smtp servers to not respond to ICMP requests (can't remember). I also cannot telnet on 25 to this server.
I hasten to add that all of the above has been tried on multiple PC's.
I might have to bite the bullet and ring Orange, God help me...
Edit. Is anyone else successfully using smtp.orange.net?
Oh well, it looks like smtp.orange.net just doesn't want to play anymore. Not a problem though as I'm now successfully sending email using my ISP's SMTP server instead.
found this thread whilst trying to fix a similar problem my mum's having with Orange.net smtp server not working. Was hoping to find an alternative server... But alas!
Anyway, I digress...
I'm basically doing my good turn for the day.
I recently signed up for 02 broadband, and after realising all my email addresses stopped sending, i chased the problem a bit, and found out they kinda neglegt to inform you they sit you behind an invisible proxy that basically blocks ALL port 25 traffic (smtp traffic) to anything except for their own relay: relay.o2broadband.co.uk
Basically, change your smtp setting to relay.o2broadband.co.uk (no authentication needed I think) and you'll find you can suddenly send emails again. Of course i tried this on my mum's pc, but not being an o2 (now Sky) customer on her connection, I had no joy
So not an Orange problem... But thought I'd enlighten you all

Most of The larger ISP's block port 25, (Be unblocks it if your on a static IP) so you need to use your own ISP's smtp server to send emails, Googlemail you don't as they use ports 465 and 587 for smtp.
Most of the smaller ISP's don't block it.

I've been reading your excellent points about Orange smtp problems, and after much frustration trying to send emails from my PDA, I've entered the smtp address you've given above to Adrian some time ago and it works! - at last I can send e-mails from the UK - many thanks. Does anyone know the Orange smtp address to use in the USDA and Europe, as I travel a lot too, and need to send e-mails while overseas.
I also agree with other users comments - why doesn't Orange reply to these requests !!
After months of frustration and no help from Orange I had virtually given up on trying to send email from my Orange.net address using Outlook Express. Some said 'we are aware and trying to resolve the issue' whilst others said 'we don't support Outlook Express talk to Microsoft' and so it went on.
Eventually researching the problem I came across this website and saw the message above from 'Stevelondon' dated August 2006.
Clues emerged and I solved the issue - then contacted Orange and told them how to deal with enquiries!!!!
Orange is not my ISP - I use btinternet.com.
As Stevelondon says ISP's are increasingly inclined to stop outgoing (smtp) mail that is not from one of their own addresses. This is to prevent spamming so, in order to send mail from an Orange.net address you need to set the outgoing server to your ISP details - not to smtp.orange.net
So - on Outlook Express go to TOOLS - ACCOUNTS and select the account where you Orange email is listed and click on it then click on PROPERTIES.
Open the SERVER tab and then:
Incoming mail - put pop.orange.net
Outgoing mail - put your ISP details (Not smtp.orange.net)
[For mine I put smtp.btinternet.com]
Tick the box 'My server needs authentication'
Then click on and open the SETTINGS box
Check the box - 'LOGIN USING'
Then fill in the Username details and password that you use for your ISP
(Not your Orange Username and password)
[For mine I put username@btinternet.com and my password]
Click OK on the settings screen.
Click OK on the Servers tab
It worked for me. I now send mail as though from my Orange email address. On arrival it says it is from my Orange email address and replies come in addressed to my Orange email.
Hope it also works for some of you other frustrated people.
Finally - just to repeat - this is when you want to send mail from Orange.net when 'Orange.net' is not you main ISP.
By the way, I recently successfully sent e-mails from France using Sweeperdog's suggested ; smtp.orangehome.co.uk ; but this could have been as Orange has a network base in France. I will also carry my ISP's smtp address in future as you recommend.
