My internet connection went dead for 5 days, and when it came back, it was / is VERY slow (415kbs download, although I have a 2mb connection)
I have lost count of the ammount of times my service has been disturbed - and I am through caring now. Orange, as a business and service provider are the absolute SHITS!
How would I go about leaving their service and joining another ISP? I believe they would have a "marker" on the line whih would prevent me leaving them for a while? How long does this process take? And does anybody reccomend another ISP?

It depends if you are in a current contract whether you will need to pay the balance of the term. So if you are 6 months into a 12 month contract, you will need to pay a lump sum equivalent to remaining 6 months payments.
But the procedure for leaving is the same if you're in contract or out of contract. Ask for a MAC code and give it to your new ISP.

I would not worry too much if you are in contract, I was too.
I simply moved address for my problems to start, following moving Orange, after 3 months of pointless and exhaustive technical support calls still could not tell me why my 8mb connection failed to pass 159kbs, with 6 months left of my contract I used the argument that they were not even providing a tenth of what I pay for and with speeds less than dial up having "broadband" was not cost efficient.
As long as you have tried speaking with Orange's broadband technical team to no avail and have exhausted all your options speak to their disconnections team, if they expect you to pay, speak to the executive office like I did.
Remember they are the last resort and have much more power than the phone monkeys (I can say that as I used to be one).
