Following initially promising discussions with Executive Office concerning my (apparent) fixed rate of 2268/285 since April, I received a statement today which I believe to be a "first" in Orange explanations/excuses :-
Quote With regards to your slow connection speed I passed your details to our Critical Faults Team. The response I received confirmed the package you are on at present is a 2 Meg connection speed.
However, in April your speed was reduced from 5 Meg to 2 Meg the reason for this was an automatic system sweep, which identified you were receiving a faster speed than the package allowed.Unquote
Has anyone else heard of this "automatic system sweep" ?
The statement, by the way, contradicts previous statements in writing from Orange concerning the connection speed that I was receiving. I am still on an original (December 2004) 1meg contract, currently paying £17.99 per month.
I have expressed my opinion in an email to Executive Office and Tom Alexander and await their comments in writing.

Yep speedtest has some problems. Getting 3Mb at BroadbandMax, but that's still sh1T against what I used to have 2 weeks ago!
Rebooted the router and it now resolves to Your IP address is: 91.108.xxx.xxx (customer12711.pool1.Bristol-AVN0950-BAS0001.orangehomedsl.co.uk) which got me up from 2.4Mb to 3Mb.
I am on Kesgrave (suffolk) exchange and have been with Freeserve, Wanadoo and Orange, though not always on the same exchange for many years. i am on the Max package up to 8 meg, but have only ever got a maximum of 2 meg. my line only supports up to 2 meg and would be OK if i got this speed. my average download speed for 2008 so far is 1.4 meg (i use the speed tester from Broadband Choices). The last 2 weeks have been (and still are) down to around 100 kbps download speed and around 250 kbps upload. over the last 2 days i have used Speedtest with similar results.
i have checked my cables and connections and receive the same results each time. i am convinced that it is Orange at fault.
It would be great to have someone else on the same exchange with similar readings as this would prove it is Orange at fault. The actual speed I get is nowhere near the stated speed on the stats above.
i would be interested in hearing any if any one else is experiencing the same speed issues.
Consider whether your line is capable of a higher speed. If you are a long way from the exchange you may be obtaining your best speed. Check here and tell us what BT say about the speed you can get:

Check your line hasn't been capped because you exceed the download limit. There are reports that Orange are putting the cap on all the time instead of the hours of 6pm til midnight.
Keith, thanks. i spoke with Orange today and they are to look at the speed problem . i also requested my MAC code, and also secured a free month. they were keen to hold on to me as a customer.
i have tried the connections but not filter yet. i cannot figure out where to go for the graph.

Orange are definitely refusing to re-instate my original speed, saying that :
Quote:
I accept that you were advised you could have a faster connection in October 2005 however, as this is no longer possible the offer as stated above was made.
and

As previously advised it is not possible to increase your speed on the package you are on.
Of course we all know that technically it is possible so it is becoming clear to me that Orange are currently applying a marketing technique with an end result of having all customers on at least a telephone+broadband package and are quite willing to lose those customers who only want broadband.
