I can't say how dreadful, as the speedtest page is still loading after 30-odd minutes.
I have a desktop connected via the red ethernet port, and two wireless laptops and recently tried to connect my old work laptop via ethernet on the yellow port. The WiFi card in the laptop has stopped working so I need another method. I disabled the Digital TV feed as suggested elsewhere in this forum, and it started working, but now the performance sucks like a Dyson.
I also get the message "Local Area Network 2: A cable is unplugged" every few seconds followed by "Local Area Network 2 is now connected at 100mbps".
I live a long way from anywhere, in France, so I expect poor speeds, I get about 1Mbps when the getting is good, but this laptop is the only one affected. My other main laptop is registering 1Mbps too. I installed the thing without the installation disk, using the French manual, but I think it's OK.
It is peeing me off as I use the laptop to connect to my office for telecommuting, and if it doesn't work I have to go into work.
Any ideas? I tried connecting via the ip address but that didn't help, and all lights are on solidly except for the >> one, which is flashing regularly.

I disconnected all PCs and then swapped cables on the laptop and the desktop. Suddenly the laptop worked fine and the desktop slowed to a near halt. This is pretty good evidence that it is the yellow port that is the problem.

Are you saying that all 3 machines when connected are all giving poor performance ?
Try connecting just one machine and running a speed test.
No, when I have four PCs connected one of them is slow, when it is the only one connected it is also slow. It is too slow for the speedtest to even run.

So it does seem to be either the yellow port or one of the ethernet cables or a combination of the 2.
You do realise that a cabled machine will run at a faster speed than a wireless machine, and the more wireless connections you have, the slower the connection will be, so with only a 1Mb connection you will certainly notice a degradation with all 4 machines running at the same time.
I realise all of that, but the fact is that I unplugged the cables at the box and swapped ports and that just moved the problem, so it's not the cable. It must therefore be the yellow port, but why?
Is it a common thing for liveboxes to be buggered? I just switched from a Hecules wireless modem/router that could support 4 ethernet connections and 8 wireless with no problem. (And before you ask, I had no choice)

Not sure about in France but it seems to be quite a common problem reported on this site.....getting it replaced is very difficult and one of Orange's last resort actions it seems.
Presume you need the Livebox for voip so if you can't get it working you have no option but to try for a replacement.
Read this thread and see if it helps, check out the links that are included>>>>
Borednow I will try to get a replacement. They usually do something just to get rid of me so they don't have to listen to my execrable French.
keithwjones That is a good idea, I didn't think to ask if it could run a hub, but if it can that would solve the problem until I can get the WiFi working again.

The comment about WiFi intrigued me. e.g. say a 54Meg Wifi connection should comfortably support 2 x 8MB Orange connections shouldn't it?
Remember that the 54Mbps only refers to the communication between the computer and the router. If the incoming connection to the router is poor then you won't see anything like 54Mbps, in fact even with up to 8meg, you won't.
54Mbps is the theoretical maximum data rate the channel can handle but the actual speed will vary based on distance to the router, interference, number of items using the wireless network. So if youhave 2 items connected, one being 2 storeys away from the router and one being next to the router, there will be a significant performance difference.
An ethernet 100Mbps arrangement is infinitely better.
So in theory 54Mbps wifi router should allow 2 items to connect wirelessly to an "up to" 8meg connection.
