We just wanted to let you know that on Monday 28th July we’re closing our old Site builder and FTP My Site.
In its place we’ve launched a fabulous new tool called Orange Website Maker, which allows you to do loads more stuff. It’s important that if you want to keep your site, you need to migrate over to this new tool.
This has me completely pi**ed off, the only reason i have stayed with this company for all these years was because of the free FTP web space and now they want to close it down in favour of some crappy template driven rubbish! and to make it worse they are demanding extra money if you want the deluxe option of the new service.
OK, the old site builder templates where crap but for the FTP users there are no restrictions on creativity, why on earth do they want to mess with something so well established as the FTP community? are they total idiots?
The community was around long before they took over and if Orange come to their senses will still be around long after the have sold up to some other company.
Come on people we have got to show them how this no brain-er of an idea will effect thousands of people, they really don't understand what they are doing.

I entirely agree with you on this; like you, my major reason for staying with Orange is that I run a community website hosted using their free web space.
Where has your quote come from? There's nothing on the Mysite home page as far as I can see, and I've received no email. However, I get 200+ spam emails into my Orange account every day, and it's possible that my filters have killed it if they used a "different" address. If you have an email, would you mind forwarding it to simondaw (at) msn.com, please? TIA.
Interesting correspondence and I agree with everything you say.
I have also this evening had a go at trying to do some web stuff using the new 'sitebuilder' stuff. It has got to be the most non user friendly way of producing a website.
Absolutely appalling!!! It might finally be my excuse to move to Sky. I don't need Orange for anything else!
I've also tried the new webmaker. It's awful. It's unstable- I get an error message telling me something like "A script on this page is causing your computer to become slow. Do you want to abort." It seems complicated to use. FTP was so much easier. I now have to figure out what to do with my web pages. Do I move them elsewhere or do I spend hours and days reconfiguring them in webmaker.
Oh, nice to see an increase in how much we can now store. Shame it's gone to waste because the site is unusable.
EDIT - Just realized it's actually a decrease in storage space because each site allowed 50Mb and you could have up to 5 sites. 50x5 equalling 250 Mb.

I managed to find a free web host.... it gives ftp access and 5 gig of web space! i have all ready moved my site lock stock and barrel with no problems at all, here's some pics of the control panel .....
300 gig bandwidth ....
easy ftp access by using the details supplied ....
and far more in the way of free extras than Orange have on offer ....
they have a few restrictions, you cant host mp3s or any file larger than 8mb but to get around this there's a great file hosting site called boxstr.com who offer free file hosting with a 1 gig per day bandwidth limit simply place large files there and then just link to them.
Hi Jo
I totally agree with all that you say, it really is the most annoying thing which has happened in all my years as a Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange customer.
I did a search on Google and found this thread.
I use(d ) my webspace to store photographs, avatars, signatures etc for various forums which I use plus gallerys of pics of holidays for relations to view...you know the kind of thing...it was just so easy to log-in to FTP my site and add a photo or a self-built site, then email someone the link.
I am so fed-up with Orange that I might bin my contract with them and go elsewhere, I don't see any reason for giving them loyalty ( and money) if this is the disgraceful way they treat their customers.
I'm curious to know what they hope to gain from this exercise, apart from the fact that they'll have severely reduced running costs due to the fact that hardly anyone will be using their "free" webspace anymore.
I too have tried the new Webmaker "thing" after reading their well- written email;
>> "Have a really fancy animated flash website "
>> "Choose from many swanky looking templates to build your site on"
SWANKY?? ---I haven't heard that word since my granny died! It's a horrendous piece of software, and why does it have to be Flash?
You don't seem to be able to link to your photos ----------hold on, I've just answered my own question.
It's crap! I won't be using it .
RE: 110mb
I had a look at 110mb and on the face of it it looks like a great idea and it will be --for those who want their site hosted.
Unfortunately I would fall foul of their Terms and Conditions, under "Things not to do" ----
Using your account mainly for file storage of images, videos or music.
110mb is a text content provider. It's not a place to mainly backup/store your files. Because uploading/download large files needs the hard drive head to move a lot. Hence reducing their life span, and decreasing I/O performance for everyone.
and this bit ---
Not having a homepage in your root folder-- or still having original 'Account Created' page 15+ days of your signup date.
Also includes not having a proper website while having uploaded tons of files to your account, hence using your account mainly for file storage, which is not allowed.
So, pretty good as long as you're gonna put an actual website on there.
I feel sorry for anyone who has a very large website or two or Three, on their Orange webspace, they're gonna be stuck in front of their monitor for the rest of this month.
Sorry this is so long, I needed to RANT badly.
Cheers, and good luck with your complaints although I fear you're wasting your time ---They just don't CARE.
Thanks for that Sweeper, it rings a bell from the old days of using Terapin to upload stuff to Freeserve.
FTP'ing to Orange was done with IE which was the main reason it was so simple.
I've a funny feeling the ftp/freeserve route is long gone and if it isn't it soon will be
How does the affiliate link / programme work if it's all free? I presume this means they are looking to charge in the future
As far as i know its just a promotion to raise their profile by getting people to sign up in return they will feature the web site with the highest referrers on their front page as a way of returning the favour.

I suspect some toss pot executive looking at a spreadsheet realised that in one stroke it would be possible to completely wipe out the old site builder and ftp service, then by offering a new feature limited replacement there may be money to be made by also promoting a deluxe version.
This with absolutely no thought to how this would effect people, the problem is that those who we can contact via email to voice are concerns are either total dead heads or so menial in the company that they would not even dream of contesting anything that comes from above them.
This leaves us all in the @#it, there seems no way of reaching the people in the company who can make any difference.

This is the reality of oranges total disregard for their paying customers, this whole matter is a disgrace.
I am so hacked off over this short notice withdrawal of the service
I have tried the 'new' web designer but it is useless - really restrictive & it is impossible for me to retain my website in anywhere near it's current format.
2 years work down the drain
I've emailed for support but just get 'standard' replies directing me to the FAQs - which do not cover my queries such as lengthening pages and insertingtables (essential with sports fixtures).
This is one of the main reasons I have stayed with freeservve/wanadoo/orange for so long - no reason for me to stay anymore
things don't seem so bad, i have moved every thing over to the space they provide and submitted the new URL to Google, i have linked to the new URL from my site ( at Orange ) so least all my regulars know i am moving.
orange remain complete morons for doing this to us all.
