France Telecom SA's mobile arm Orange announced an overhaul of its UK operations, including opening a further 60 stores, bringing its call-centre operations back to the UK from India, and rolling out a superfast network as part of its plans to revitalise the group under new chief executive Tom Alexander.
The group said the overhaul will mean the loss of 450 administration, management and support staff. The group will create 500 customer-facing jobs - split between call centre and shop staff - as it returns much of its customer services focus to the UK by the end of the year. A spokesman added that the group's "intention" is to eventually have all customer-facing queries dealt with in the UK.
Although Orange emphasises it is not calling a halt to its outsourcing activities altogether, the spokesman added that the call centre decision would give it a "bit more control" over its customer services operation
To add to the company's new customer focus strategy, Orange said it will roll out 450 new 2G base stations and invest in its 3G network to improve coverage of mobile TV and internet as part of its network strategy.
Even faster 3G+ services which will offer download speeds of up to 7.2 megabytes per second (mbps), are planned for 30 UK cities in the next 18 months, while a superfast network with speeds of up to 14.4 mbps will launch next year, initially with a rollout in five UK cities
