I can only get on a few sites, thank goodness this is one of 'em (all be it slowly). Although I can get on www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk which tells me that i've got a download speed of 9233k!!
Typical isn't it, Orange put us on adsl2+ and then this happens, our lass ses it was ok this morning around 7am.
I'm going to try the DNS thing next, when the problem is solved at Orange do I just put my DNS back to auto?

I'm not gonna try this because I simply dont know what I'm doing (techno spaz) and may change something then end up in a mess I won't know how to get out of ! Hopefully Orange will fix it themselves soon !
I've left the primary server on what it says on the livebox config and just put the alternative on the new one that tall man said, can I leave it like this for good now??????????????
You can leave it as it is. If you want to change it back in a week or once they have fixed it, you can do so. You have one DNS server each from two companies, so it is unlikely to both fail (unless the entire internet goes down). Remember it only affects the computer you are using, so you can set it up on a PS3, etc.
In addition, if you have a separate router, you may change the DNS settings on that - then you won't have to do it with every computer that joins the network.
Regardless, it's easy to change it back. Just click the other button...

How do you change the dns Karl? I went to the livebox config and tried under system information, but it wont let me change it. I've got a livebox. I tried the links on this site about changing dns but all I get is the dreaded "Internet Explorer cant display the web page". Any help would be appreciated.

I've had 2 days of intermittent disconnections and today it is simply not working at all. (I am using my back-up 3G dongle)
I called technical 'support' which I hate doing as their customer service is abysmal.
NEITHER of us could understand what the other was saying for most of it, but basically the guy said there was a major outage affecting not just the UK, or my area, but 'the WHOLE WORLD'.
Like you I am using my back up mobile internet connection. Thank God for this! Could at least get my e-mails using Orange okay until today - now nothing at all. How can they get away with this. Believe I started getting problems from Sunday night.

Obviously the problem of Orange's dire service remains unsolved, but at least I'm online at a decent speed.

odarnit, i'm running XP so these instructions might differ from yours if your running something else.
-Open network connections in 'control panel'
-Right click your 'LAN or high speed internet' icon
-Click 'properties'
-Select the 'internet protocol (TCP/IP)' then click 'properties'
-The next page on mine lets you choose from automaticly obtaining the DNS server address or putting your own in, if it already had the server numbers typed in write them down and renter them if you need to
-Choose to put your own in
-Go to your livebox config page and find the Primary DNS server under system information (where you said you couldn't change it)
-note this down and enter it into the 'preferred DNS server' box in 'internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties'
-then in the 'alternate DNS server' box type 208.67.220.222 or 208.67.220.220
-click ok and ok again
This should work fine, by doing this you are choosing to use the Orange DNS server first but if this doesn't work it goes to the new one you entered that does.
All you have to do to put it back is choose to automaticly find the servers - if it ialready had the server numbers typed in write them down and renter them if you need to
When you've done this for some reason you will have to type 192.168.1.1 in to your web page bar to get into your Livebox config.
The service status phone line (0845 330 7124) says that they are having problems. Don't bother with the 50p per minute "technical support" script readers in Bangalore. We complained to Customer Support and they said 24hrs to rectify. We started having patchy performance at the weekend and then lost all internet and email today completely but service came back just after 7pm.

Perhaps thetallone can tells us why this is?
Thanks very much Karl, tried to start a new post but it didn't work! I'm new to this forum. Anyway, my web pages all seem to be back up (for the time being) so I haven't done the above yet. I have saved your instructions though for the inevitable "next time Orange goes down" and will deploy it then. I'm running XP too and your instructions are very clear to me. Thanks again!!
No probs, I'm fairly new to all this broadband fixing stuff and I've picked up a lot from this site, I hope it's going to get me through to the end of my contract in about 11months! I found this site just after joining 'Homemax' and it made me very worried, but I still have a little hope that Orange can sort it out.
