As a night cap, I have just changed POP and SMTP addresses to Orange.co.uk and my test messages were sent ok but I didn't receive any e-mails.
So I changed Incoming Server addresses POP3 back to orangehome.co.uk and left outgoing SMTP addresses as Orange.co.uk and test messages worked twice- sent and received !!
Sorry, I should have been more explicit in my description! Ironically, as I'm trying to use a BT email account - I use mail.btinternet.com for POP3 receive and smtp.orange.co.uk for SMTP send.
So for an Orange account, you'd have to use:
POP3: pop.orangehome.co.uk
SMTP: smtp.orange.co.uk
I never wanted to use Orange for email at all, but because they block all other SMTP ports, I have no option.
Even for a free service, they're getting me close to the end of my tether!
I had problems until about 4 weeks ago (see previous mail) when after much trial and error I set up the mail server addresses of both my accounts to the following - Incoming - pop.orangehome.co.uk, Outgoing - smtp.orange.co.uk. (My account email account servers are fsworld.co.uk and wanadoo.co.uk) This seems to have worked and had no problems since. (touch wood)
Tech Support both by e-mail and phone could not help and just repeatedly blamed outlook although in the end they admitted that they had problems and then retracted that!
Hi everybody.
It's nice (?) to know that I'm not alone in being hacked off by Orange's attitude to this problem. I find it very difficult, almost impossible, to consider that I should keep a minute-by-minute log of everything I do e-mailwise (so that I can give a blow-by-blow account to the 'support' staff), and like other posters get no joy whatsoever from oranges helpline (is that a breach of the Trades Descriptions Act?), merely suggestions that OE settings are wrong (they have remained unchanged for at least 18 months), this should be changed, that should be altered, but nothing suggested seems to make any difference. Now, while preparing this post I've rec'd a call from a friend to whom I've tried to send 3 things over the last 48 hrs. On every occassion the message has (apparently) not been sent with no reason given. Jack now tells me that he has in his inbox 3 mails from me, all received within a Three minute period withing the past ten minutes !!
Do we have any solicitors out there? Perhaps we should start a class action against Orange for (multiple) breach of contract ??

P.S. There appears to be no problem with incoming e-mails
I run my own internal mail server which them sends email on to smtp.orangehome.co.uk
I have absolutely no issue with receiving mail. Sending mail worked fine when I went to bed last night (11PM). It's now 8:26AM bank holiday monday morning, and guess what, no outgoing mail for me either.
I use OpenDNS for my DNS servers for resolving addresses. At present, when I send mail, it goes to a queue on my server and sits there:
The status message: "Host or domain name not found. Name service error for name=smtp.orangehome.co.uk type=MX: Host not found, try again"
So I started using dig and nslookup to look up the MX records for smtp.orangehome.co.uk, guess what, it no longer exists. That's right. Even according to what claim to be Orange's DNS servers (they belong to a company called "Energis" really), smtp.orangehome.co.uk no longer exists.
Requesting smtp.orange.co.uk produces the following IPs and HELO headers:
It would appear that Orange, yet again, have changed stuff and not told us, or updated their webpages to reflect the change. They also seem to have reused freeserve mail servers, and not really bothered to update them/update their IDs. At least Orange half own their mail servers.
Orange's frequent, and irregular changes are driving me mad, along with my family. We're all trying to use the web, and suddenly the gateway their end changes, or some other quirk, and then it's about 20 minutes reconfig time on all the PCs. Pathetic.
Outgoing email is still down. I cannot ping any of the 3 servers associated with smtp.orange.co.uk. A trace route goes pear shaped within the France Telecom network so I suspect problems within the Orange infrastructure. It probably won't get fixed until tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the 3 servers at smtp.orange.co.uk do not seem to respond to ping full stop.
I can't say whether this is due to problems or whether it's by design, however, I know that from my school's network tracerouting and pinging are blocked, and a number of services do not repond to ping, but do work.
sympathy to all, I know just how infuriating this is. Suggest you take advice from 'Borednow' and change server address; I did and since then have had no problem. Respect to 'Borednow'!
