I think he's refering to the "downstream" figure which probably would have been 8128, am I right?
If it's dropped to 7.5mb or 7500 there could be a number of reasons for that but the best way would be to post your stats and we can take it from there. Put 192.168.1.1/testinfo.html and copy and paste the second set of results (from ADSL Version).
Well it does confirm that you have some kind of problem either with Orange, your line or equipment at home, in order to determine this you could post your line stats like this:-
In the address bar (where you'd put www etc.) type 192.168.1.1/testinfo.html
Type the above exactly as I've written it here a login box will appear the username is admin and the password is admin. You will be presented with the info in question. Copy and paste the 2nd paragraph (from ADSL Version) like I've done above.

I think hes got it from the internet connection icon in the system tray. (Internet Connection Status) it only shows if you tick "show in system tray" or its in Network Connections in Internet Gateway.

My above poses assume that you are using Orange's Livebox to connect to the internet if that is the case give what I said a try.
Incidently my connection changed from 8.1 to 7.6 overnight this is probably a "settling in " period since Orange migrated me to ADSL2+ last week. I've now got it back up to 8.1 by rebooting livebox.
