Long time no speaks... long time no problems!.. until today..
This morning I switched on the PC and noticed the ADSL had not sync’d.. (The green light was flashing), now from past experience I remembered that if I made an outgoing call i.e. 1471 on my cordless phone this would normally fix the problem... don’t know why but it’s worked in the past.. so I did it and ‘hey presto’ static light and Speedtouch connected... wait a minute did that say ‘Connected at 2.1mbps’.. bloody hell for the past Three years it’s been constant at 650kbps!!Put the phone down and within 30 seconds ADSL had dropped out... so having noticed the dramatic speed change I did the silly thing and phoned Orange to see if they had changed (upgraded) my account.. (something which I refused hands down when offered by their telesales staff about 2 months ago stating.. ‘I am certain if I go for the upgrade there will be technical, issues problems etc’)...
The Indian technical guy told me the account had not been changed nor upgraded and after ten minutes of scripted technical advice (cumulating in... ‘It must be a filter problem’!!).. I politely hung up.
I then remembered a friend saying he had a similar problem and found that if he unplugged Sky from the BT socket it allowed the ADSL to sync and lock... worth a try, so I did it and this time it worked.. I left the Sky unplugged for ten minutes then plugged it back in.. still OK.
My speed has gone from 650kbps to 2.1mbps overnight but Orange are unsure why... has anyone else had this kind of problem Re. The ADSL/Sky and Orange (unrequested upgrade).
Thanks for the response, I only have one filter and have not touched it or changed it's position for Three years!
I have shut down and booted the PC several times this morning (testing) and it connects first time at 2.1mbps I have even perceived an actual difference in speed .. so I am not moaning, just intrigued as to why Orange don't know how this has happened. and without a bit of knowledge I would still be on the phone to India asking for a MAC.. Re. flashing ADSL and no connection!!
Thanks,
Curlydave.
P.S Thank you for the link, anyway.. good site and interesting!
Now relate what you've got to what's shown in the link.
Where is the router plugged in and is there more than one filter between it and the BT linebox ?
No need to be ......it's very easy to get it wrong !
Many of the problems posted on here are to do with wiring/filters/PC settings which Orange has no control over.
Hi Borednow,
My set up is correct in relation to the diagram and options shown in the link!
The set up has been in place without alteration since March 2005.
Has not been touched, altered, moved or anything!!
My real point is why after 3 years of no connection problems this morning, I had problems with the ADSL only to find that when I attained a connection (unplug and reconnect Sky) my speed had increased ?
What has this to do with a filter position that has been dormant and working fine for 38 months?
now from past experience I remembered that if I made an outgoing call i.e. 1471 on my cordless phone this would normally fix the problem... don’t know why but it’s worked in the past.. so I did it and ‘hey presto’ static light and Speedtouch connected...
unplugged Sky from the BT socket it allowed the ADSL to sync and lock... worth a try, so I did it and this time it worked.. I left the Sky unplugged for ten minutes then plugged it back in.. still OK.
These 2 actions, technically, probably produce exactly the same reaction on the line.
Have you tried unplugging everything (phone and Sky box) and just have the router connected directly into the BT linebox ?
If everything runs OK then it has to be a problem on property side of the BT linebox, either wire 3 (if it's connected), phone or Sky box. If it still occurs then it's either Orange or BT.
Thanks for the advice!, I think we maybe getting crossed lines
The problem was resolved the moment I disconnected Sky (and has not re-occurred since.. even with Sky continually connected). So everything is back to normal.. except since the issue yesterday my speed has increased (not moaning!! ), Orange say no upgrade has taken place and BT also state that no upgrade has taken place at my local exchange.
I was just interested in how this had occurred,.. the initial problem with the ADSL would not have been resolved by Orange Technical support because they too were pointing to a filter problem.
Still I have taken on-board your last comments :
"These 2 actions, technically, probably produce exactly the same reaction on the line".
and:
"..it has to be a problem on property side of the BT line box, either wire 3 (if it's connected), phone or Sky box. If it still occurs then it's either Orange or BT".
Probably !......from your 1st post I assumed that the disconnect was regular and only making a call or unplugging Sky cured it.......nobody on here complains about an increase in speed
