Hi all
posted this before - in the wrong section DOH!
Elhana & borednow kindly offered advice.
Just amn update.
Checking everyday ( when speedtester works!)
and it has take a week but it has improved slightly to:
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1152 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 922 kbps
which is better than 250!
Still it is painfully slow....................................................
trying to watch a vid link to you tube I have watched with no probs on me old setup with the speedtouch modem before I " upgraded" ! still pauses & stops to buffer.
"assume" it will continue to get better ( I hope?)
Have you tried other sites such as the BBC. I was speaking to a mate who's on Bethere 16MB service and he says youtube is creaking at the seams and often has trouble playing videos
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1152 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

1152 downstream sync is an odd rate for you to get, usually that speed shows it's a fixed 1 meg connection, which is possible if the system thinks your line is badly unstable.
Technically it won't improve, the sync rate normally, should max out at the highest it can for an ADSL Max connection, you're getting 1152 and a 1 meg profile, unless as I mentioned it's been fixed then there's no direct room for improvement. Could be due to a fault or some other problem but it's hard to tell, best to post your line stats along with that speedtest result in future so we can check all the details.
Hi all
actually e-mailed Orange ( i know normally a useless waste of time) anyhow I advised them not to reply with a standard return but to actually pass on to someone who could deal with and some other rubbish re my previous doings & compo & actually got a reply!
Mostly hints on getting it to work properly ( most I have done thru advice on here) but one piece of info troubles me.
They state the speed allocated to my line is 0.5 meg.
0.5?
I Upgraded ( yeah whatever!) from my old broadband I had had since the old freeserve days to home max up to 8 meg ( does anyone ACTUALLY ever get this speed!?)
Since one of the things they cocked up was my transfer from BT ( they forgot to do it!) AND I have never had any details / mail re my second line I am wondering if they have also " forgotten" my broadband "upgrade"
Anyhow Now I known they can deal with my account via e-mail ( HA - GOTCHYA! ) I have mailed em back for an explanation on the above.
If they have then another letter will be going and more compo ( be the 3rd lot!) will be coming my way.
They really are useless.
Why did I choose Orange?
Unfortunately like lots of others I didnt. My account was migrated from freeserve thru wanadoo etc. and I thought it easier to keep the same e-mail etc rather than change.............I nearly did change to Carphone WarehouseTalk Talk but the salesman in the shop who sold me it & omitted connection charges from his cost explanation until he had my card then just tried to take it. I went of me trolley ( as you would!)
They still tried to take me line over tho and that took some sorting - so I THOUGHT I had a lucky escape !??
Anyhow elhana asked for line stats
IP profile for your line is - 500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 928 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 456 kbps
Hi approx 2 miles I would say.
??
I got a reply from Orange this morning ( quicker than expected!)
thay reckon there engineers have decided that the quicket my line can suppoirt is 0.5 meg.
My neighbour on a different provider gets much quicker on tests than me
;-(
when do they do this ""check?""
I swear I was on quicker before my " upgrade"
Th first month of my new package I was still using my old speedtouch modem as I am on win 98 on 1 PC and I couldnt get it too work and after god knows how many phone calls they just told me it wasnt compatable.
When I found out how to make it work it was amazing how simple it was to do! - but 2 1/2 hours in total on the phones with Orange and they couldnt!
Idiots...........
Thanks all - I wish I could give something " back " to this forum as it is a good resource - unfortunately I have nothing to give as I know nowt !
I just cant belive that the best I can recieve is 0.5 meg!
cheers
Nile
Yes, I agree with some earlier posters. You seem to be limited to 1 meg. When you go on to 8 meg Orange run data up and down your line to check the fastest speed your connection can handle reliably and then set your max at that. 1 meg seems very low for 2 miles. Have you got your modem/router pugged into the first socket that comes into your house? If not, try that and take out an other extension sockets. I'm 4 miles from my exchange and get about 2.5 meg - used to get about 2.2 with Orange (now escaped!)
Well from those stats they're pretty much right about you getting 1/2 a meg. Looks like it was lucky to be running at 1 meg before when you tested it. It's an ADSL Max connection so it runs at the best speed it can.
Unless there's a fault, which there's nothing directly to suggest there is, or a wiring problem then you're unlikely to get much faster on that line. Checking your wiring would be a good place to start, if you can get just a little better then you should ideally get a stable 1 meg.

Update.
plugged livebox into master socket - put netgear card in PC & using wireless to test. ( although widnows seems to be swiching the network on & off all the time - i.e. icon disappears then comes up again with connected to livebox@ etc. still trying to suss that! ??) anyhow.
results now:
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1952 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 698 kbps
attainable download rate on livebox stats has doubled.
Noise margin & attenuation near enuf the same.
IP profile now says 750 ( will they decide!)
DSL connection rate ( down) has gone up
a lot.
but actual thruput achived has gone down.
anyone explain / sum this up?
should I levae it on wireless pulgged into the main box for now tos ee if there is an improvment over time?
Oh & if anyone can help with the losing wiresless connection constantly and having to click repair it would be cool.
-Your profile has gone from 500 to 750 and throughput achieve has gone up from 456 to 698, so that looks good
-It will probably go up with time. The slower download speed for this session is probably contention
-The repair thing may be a laptop problem. We see that all the time on the wireless network we support where windows changes the connection method. Usually caused by going to the "available networks" signal strength graph thing and selecting connect from there, rather than from the place where you add in your access points. If you need more info let me know and I will look on the laptop later
No, your IP profile has gone from 1000 to 500 to 750 with relevant throughput 922 to 456 to 698 so it's not settling down at all, there's obviously something going on somewhere between the exchange and you. The high attenuation might be confirming this because you're not that far from the exchange.
Keep plugged into the main BT linebox and also check if any wires other than 2 and 5 are connected. Also keep checking BT speedtester once a day.
aye
plan to check all the wiring tomorrow.......
FYi its not a laptop. its one of my office PCs that was hard wired that I put a netgear card in I had laid around.
But glad you mentioned it because I remember having the same issue once on a laptop & it was a box ticked somehwhere in some advanced settings that caused it. I will see if I can remember where the hell it was!
onward & upward.....!

Hi all
Plugged the livebox to the main socket, left it a while but got no real change, pretty much the same......
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 750 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 1504 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 646 kbps
guess thats it, as good as it gets.
bugger
thanks all for the advice......
Cheers
Nile
P****ed off at paying for 8000 and getting 646..................
just when you thought things were ok..............
slowed down again on test:
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 256 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 115 kbps
