Hello,
I subscribed to the 8 Mb package and received my livebox and activation email on the 4th of March. No problem connecting it wirelessly and surfing. However, my speed is so slow ! I thought it might be because of the 10 days testing and tried to be patient.
But the speed is still the same : around 80 to 90 kb on most of the speed test sites I tried ! That is very weird because my attainable download rate is high. Look below.
I tested both my master and extension socket as well as a wired connection but no improvement.
I check on speedtestebt.com and had the following :
1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 64 kbps(UP-STREAM) 128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 89 kbps
I did this test several times on two days and only the IP throughput varies from 84 to 89...
I contacted Orange a first time on Monday that said they would contact an engineer to test the line. I received a text message yesterday asking to call back what I did. Unfortunately they told me that there is no problem with the line which I tried to argue (not easy knowing that I am french...).
That is quite bad but what is worse is that after turning the power off and then on in the evening, my livebox can not connect on the web anymore ! The @ light is on intermittently and I can only access the livebox by it's IP address. The ADSL status went from “connected” to “synchronized” and I don’t know what that means…
When I turn the Livebox on, the “problem” light flashes for a bit of time and then stops. My talk light is now off when it has been on since I activated my talk number and the wifi light is on and allows me to access the box configuration page.
Could you please help me by giving me some advice ?
Thank you very much.
Ben

The Noise Margin is massive and could be the reason for the problem.
Try this, on your master BT linebox, unscrew the lower half and pull this away from the box. Plug the livebox into the socket that you can see inside the BT box and run the same tests again.
Well, my master BT socket does not have a test socket inside.
My house is a bit old and that may be a problem but still it does not explain such a low connection, don't you think ? And anyway it does not explain why the connection is broken since yesterday...

If the BT linebox is the old style (2 screws attaching one single face plate to the box) with old phone cabling this is not good when you have a broadband problem.
The modem/router needs to receive the strongest signal possible so if there's old cables, with extensions as well, then this is not going to help.
Keep running the BT speedtester, once or twice a day and compare the results. If there's no improvement over the next 3 days then I would say it's a line/cable problem.
Well for the time being the connection is not active so I won't be able to run any sort of tests...
Do you think this sudden loss of internet connection could be linked with the line test that has been performed ?
Could that mean that some work is being done on my line ?
Or am I condemned to pay Orange for no service my entire life (well, one month and then I can leave) ?

No, I would doubt that is the cause

If any work is beng done it could be that you are being migrated onto their LLU network from Max

Certainly 30 days without a connection AND with a record of calls to customer/technical service should allow you to leave without cancellation charges.
Others on this site have discovered that asking for a MAC code "miraculously" re-instates their connection......you could try this !!
Explain again exactly what lights are showing and how fast they're flashing ?
When I turn on the box, I have :
-all light on for a second (as usual)
-error light flashes for a few seconds
-@ light then flashes quickly then slowly
-finally wifi light turns on
So when the box is on, I have :
-wifi light on
-@ light flashing slowly
At the beginning (before my disconnection), there were 3 lights on : @, wireless and talk service. Now the talk service light is off and the second line does not work.
I will try to call again Orange this evening (after work) to report the connection default.
Well I haven't tried yet because the wireless connection is quite good.
I can access the Livebox setup page so it means that the connection works. Besides I know that a 54Mbps wifi connection never reaches 54Mbps but still 90kbps is quite low ! And my PCI card used to give quite good connection speeds before I moved in my new house and went for Orange.
Anyway, this evening I will try the ethernet connection (will have to put the computer in the hall, my wife won't like that !) and try again the master socket to see if I can get back to internet.

I guess it's the classic PPP server down problem. If you have the conventional modem (Thomson etc), try to plug that in. It has helped lots of us on this forum - given PPP server down is the case
My connection is back again. In fact, for an unknown reason it had just disconnected, getting to the Livebox configuration and clicking on "connect" was enough to bring it back !
I hope I won't have to do that every now and then...
I called the Indian hotline and gave the details of my speedtester.BT.com tests. An engineer should be working on it tomorrow (second time) and probably call me during the day.
Wait and see...
Now I will go and surf with my 90kb line, waouh !!
Well, another test has been done on my line and no fault was discovered. I was resigned...
Until this very evening, I just runned a test on SpeedBT and found :
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1817 kbps
Check on speedtest.net :
It's not perfect but around 2Meg is enough for surfing, webcam and phone over ADSL...
Generally the sync speed is set by the ADSL Max system (BT), though ISP's can set certain static rates but those are usually pretty easy to spot.
Think of margin as a sort of speed currency. The more you have the greater speed you could buy. It normally targets 6db to get the best speed from the line while still keeping it stable.
