After about ten months of not being able to get my emails except at after midnight when the Orange server is less busy, I tried this and got it working. Go to the Orange home page and log in to your Orange web mail using your normal password. You will find your 'Inbox' full of spam. Copy any messages that you find there that you'd like to keep into a temp folder, You can create one quite easily. Go to 'Manage Folders' on the left hand side. Delete the contents of your 'Webmail Inbox' by clicking the little dustbin icon. My Inbox was not full. But it seems that Outlook is logging on to the server and ploughing through all the junk, then timing out.
I never had this problem when it was Wanadoo. Maybe Orange have switched off a 'Delete junk after 30 days' switch. I hope this helps someone.
PS I also enabled the 'Delete emails without confirmation' option. You might find the server chokes otherwise and you have to try again. Remember to have a good dig through the email list before you delete it all so that you don't miss anything you need to keep.
