More or less, the error message states that the Orange servers do not recognise the authentication from the mail client. I take that to be the settings within Outlook which are imported directly from Outlook 2003 when it upgrades to Outlook 2007. Nothing else changes...
I still think it's something to do with the imported data in the upgrade. 2007 is taking data or a setting from 2003 that it doesn't need.

Hmmm, possibly. As I said before I've installed it on a couple of other computers where there was no previous Outlook version and entered the account details from scratch, but as you can see, I'm still floundering!
I have had this problem sending email using Outlook 2007. I found a way to get it working but I do not understand how it works but it did.
I entered all the account details into Outlook 2007 only to find that there was a problem sending emails.
I still had outlook express installed on the same machine so I tried entering the same account details and settings to this and it worked perfectly.
Next I re-opened Outlook 2007, and it registered that there was another account on the machine (the one in outlook express) and it gave me an option to import this to 2007.
Everything seems to work fine now with the imported account. I do not understand why it works now but is a fix temporarily until I can work out why the same details do not work when manually entered to 2007.
Thanks for your reply. I am afraid I'm past trying that now. I took some earlier advice and purchased an SMTP address from Authsmtp.com. I've had no problems since! I will however try your advice when my account needs renewing (in about a year) and if it works, save myself £14 a year! Cheers, once again...
Outlook 2007 enforces authentication rules that were optional in earlier versions. Orange does not enforce authentication, and so previously any settings and SMTP server responses were ignored by Outlook. Outlook 2007 looks at the response from the SMTP server and so what may have previously worked, now does not.
The SMTP gateway address is smtp.orange.co.uk and select "no authentication".
Cheers Longjob, It wasn't enough to find a way around the problem, I had to know WHY it was happening. Your explanation made a load of sense. Thanks once again!
