I am being charged £1 per month to process a bill of £0. Orange claim it is the credit card companies who levie the charge but after speaking to mastercard and amex they beg to differ.
This unfair charge is set to increase to £2 per month from next month. Whoever thought up this business strategy is a financial genuis.
"How much do I owe?"
"Nothing"
"Great"
"That'll be £2"
To try and sort out this problem I have sent approx 20 emails to their online broadband support, made 3 phones at 7p a minute lasting a total of 60 minutes and spent far too long looking for non existant UK landlines to talk to someone about this - all without a shred of joy.
The question is: How do I get a refund without it costing more than I have already lost?

I am afraid that they have you over a barrel, this being a tactical method of improving their margins by forcing a price increase without appearing to be uncompetitive on the search engines (I was chartered in Marketing and this is so transparent). They need the increased revenue to pay for all their free or discounted offers to new customers and you, as an existing customer are the milch cow!
I to paid via a DD on my credit card and No, you are wasting your breath/money appealling to their muppets at the call centre(s)
I turned this problem around - as I was most upset with my speeds and quality of service after LLU and thus wanted to leave them and go to a better ISP. The unwarranted DD supplement charge was the final straw as it is not financially justifiable on cost grounds.
I simply emailed them, stating that I was refusing to pay the £1 direct debit charge increase and then challenged them that as 'we were now breach of contract' I would have to leave and thus like to receive my MAC code. This was promptly provided last week by return email and I am now with BT. Speed has increased from 4.6 to 6.2 mbs.

I can't think of any other company that charges a processing fee for a bill of £0. Surely it's theft, fraud or both?

This is like the BT charge for not paying by DD. It's Orange who have decided to charge for DD via a credit card not the credit card companies.
It's not fraud, it is another sure way of gaining revenue......just like BT's charge for non-DD payments.

At a push, you can kind of see where they are coming from as credit card companies charge more than banks for transactions. But to make a processing charge for invoices of £0 - wtf! Maybe it' a bit too obvious, but all they have to do is stop processing invoices that have nothing in them to avoid being tagged as theives and fraudsters.
