Last week I was greeted with a very friendly call from an Orange advisor asking me if I was happy with the service I had been receiving from Orange.
I did have some major problems a few months back but since then everything has been fine and I have had no reason to move (other than the fact I like to shop around).
After he had ascertained that I was happy he told me he could drop my monthl amount down to £17 per month (presently it is £19.99 per month). When I asked why..... he said because I was happy. "Whats the catch I asked?".... "None" he replied. Being shocked at this I said there must be a catch to which he was absolutely persistent in saying no catch and enjoy your lower price.
He then went on to tell me how they could also take my home line rental etc etc in with the new package for just a few pound more. It was a good deal but I am not one to put all my eggs in one basket and I would never have my phone service provided by my ISP for many reasons.
Anyway.... after I told him this he was all happy and stuff and then said he just had to reel off some 'blurb'.... as they do......
Then in the middle of the 'blurb' I pick up on the '12 month contract' words...... to which I promptly interupted and said...... woo........ "what 12 month contract"? Do you mean that by dropping my monthly fee you are extending me into another minimum term?" To which he replied "Yes".
I promptly told him where to go and told him that extending my contract is what I could consider a 'catch' and that he had been very misleading and, in the eyes of the law, deceiving.
So.... if Orange call you up to offer to reduce your fee... then there IS a catch.... and that is recommiting to another 12 months. I would advise against that as nowadays there are way to many providers and offers and there is always a better one around the corner.... and one that wont try and trick you.

It seems the larger ISP's are now resorting to this tactic to keep you in contract ive seen 2 other people say the same thing and are also with Orange, my cousin also had a similar call from BT Broadband not mentioning a new contract but she was on the ball and told them politely to bugger off.
Its strange cos they rarely ring you back if your having problems.
Your spot on theres always a catch.

I know someone at work who had a call from BT. The answer to the question "Are you happy" was translated into a contract extension without this being mentioned. They complained, had the tapes checked and then got out the false contract
At least if Orange rang me up I wouldn't have to lie when they asked me that question
They did this with me last October. No mention of a new contract though. Now my email has not been working properly (intermittent ability to download my emails) for the past four months and has now stopped working altogether. Presto, I phone up to cancel and they smugly tell me I've signed a new contract. This is news to me. Filthy cheating little charlatans. We should all be posting this at complaints forums for other ISPs. We want to get as many people as possible to migrate elsewhere.
I've noticed that if you ring to get a MAC code from Orange, you get a nice friendly person who sweet talks you into staying. Last time I was swayed by this and signed up for another 12 months. This time, no way Jose, got my MAC code last week (Yay!)
However if you ring needing technical support, you get an Indian call centre where no one understands what you say and you can't understand them. Gah!
I've just received this call "Are you happy" they asked .
They offered me my current deal at a reduced rate but as I told him I'm currently paying nothing for six months how can you top that??? He went away very embarrassed. Once this six months is up I'm off to a proper IPS that allows you decent online gaming. I'm currently meant to get up to 6meg but get 5meg during the day which then drops down to around 0.5 at night!!!
Idiots.
