I can't send or receive email in outlook. I can logon to my webmail account and access my email from there. I have 2 pc's. One is an xp machine. I have checked all the settings in outlook as per the Orange help/troubleshooter, reinstalled tcp/ip etc. but to no avail. My 2nd machine is an old 98 machine, with no antivirus software so I don't use it for the internet usually. However, when I try that machine it has the same problem. The email seems to time out and I get an error 0x800CCC90 on both. I have tried all the solutions suggested by Orange, and also some others on the web which I googled. It seems to point to their POP server being faulty, but their technical helpline claims the status is fine. Any other suggestions? It was fine yesterday and I have not changed anything since then as I only logged on for a few minutes to check my email, and then turned it off agin for the rest of the day. My POP3 server settings are pop.freeserve.net and smtp.freeserve.net which is what Orange told me to use. The ping test seems to be ok as well.
It is working at the moment but very slowly, and times out after 60 seconds. I have tried your suggestion and changed the ip but it makes no difference. If I ask it to wait it eventually works. This suggrests to me it is at there end, but they are denying that they have any problem. i am not sure who to contact for an email server problem, their techies do not seem to know either. I have tried setting it up on a different machine which has vista and a different antivirus software installed, but it does exactly the same thing as my pc. If it is at their end and they deny that it is, how do I get them to look into it. Their technicians are not very good, and I don't fancy spending hours on the phone going through pointless troubleshooting steps which I can do myself following their instructions on the help page. It would probably only wind me up anyway! I have had experience of their so called help before, and i am not particularly impressed. I should add that my internet is working fine otherwise.

It sounds like it could be between you and your exchange or the exchange and the servers as I have no delay using those IP addresses.

Hi grumpyoldman. i am a few miles further north in Hartlepool, where the canoe man comes from! I have tried all of their suggestions, including checking for a corrupt dbx file. I have changed the pop and smtp settings to varios others including ip addresses. I have found nothing that makes any difference. I can access my emails via webmail ok, it is when I try and download them using outlook express that I have the problems. I have tried setting up a my email on a different computer a few miles away from my home address, and I have the same problem there as well. It seems to me that everything points to a problem with Orange, but they are insistent that it is with my pc and how it is set up. I have changed nothing. it was working fine, then 5 minutes later it wasn't. It has been like this since Sunday. If it was there end I would have thought they would have noticed by now and fixed it, or at least acknowlkedged it. I have changed the time out setting from 1 minute to 5 minutes, and that seems to enable me to receive my emails without it timing out. It is a close call though.
My wife experienced a similar problem. Orange helpdesk didn't have an answer. Orange website more helpful and seemed to point to a mcafee conflict. Switching mcafee firewall off sorted the problem and emails started to flow, but obviously a security risk. Contacted mcafee who pointed us to a conflict with spyware software. Uninstalled spyware software and ensured firewall turned on. All now seems to be o.k.
I also have since the weekend had the same problems, not being able to send or receive e-mails using Outlook 2007 which has been working fine for months.
I have changed nothing or installed anything recently to cause this.
I am also experiencing the same problems on my two computers, a laptop and a desktop. One running vista and on XP.
Would appreciate anyome having a certain solution to this.
Mine went wrong at the weekend as well. It was working fine, then a few minutes later it wasn't. Nothing had changed. It is the authorising bit which seems to take an age. I too have McAfee and I have tried switching off email and IM scanning to see if it makes a difference, but it doesn't. What spyware are you using, Tango, is it just McAfee, or something else. I only have McAfee security suite to do everything for me. I seem to be able to send emails, it seems to be the receiving which is a problem for me. It takes an age to get past the authorising stage. If it is a conflict with McAfee this would have been evident when I disabled email & IM. Is McAfee antis spyware somewhere else in the settings, I don't really know my way round it that well and tend to let it do what it does automatically. Is there a solution, or should I just wait and see if it fixes itself as suddenly as it broke??? I shouls add that my wife has a laptop which has Norton as its anti virus software, and it has the same problem.

I use Computer Associates Anti-Virus and Sunbelt's CounterSpy Anti-Spyware.
For reasons other than email problems, I have to disable active protection in CounterSpy because it and the Computer Associates AV, access the same data at the same time sending the CPU usage to almost 100% and Page File usage to +400MB.....monitored via Task Manager.
This could be what's happening to you.

I have tried turning the firewall off. I have also tried disabling the anti virus software and connecting without any protection. Dangerous, I know. My pc is xp using outlook express v6 with McAfee antivirus software. My laptop is xp using outlook express v6 with Norton antivirus software. One is wired, one is wireless. they can't both be set up wrong. they both behave exactly the same, and it happened to both at the same time on Sunday. I spoke to a guy on the phone, and i asked him if it is a problem at their end as I had tried everything they suggested in their troubleshooting. His repley was " it must be then, it happens sometimes". If it is they must know either way. Their recorded message says everything is ok, so does their website.
I am still suffering the same problem as I have mentioned earlier.
Cliff I am using no anti spyware just McAfee Internet Security Suite, I understand that you cannot have any other spyware programs running with this McAfee and this is mentioned during the installation of the software.
I have tried turning off the e-mail scanning but this doesent help at all.
I have sent 4 e-mails complaining and asking for help to Orange however they just send you a generic reply that has been no help whatsoever.
Im just hoping someone can come up with a fix or solution. I am tempted to uninstall McAfee and see if the fault disapears, has anyone running McAfee tried this yet ?
I see there are other Posts appearing about this so I must go and read them. I would say that we all should keep badgering Orange at least they will be aware of the problem, although I have no doubt they will not admit to it !!!
