My pc is on XP home wired to a live box and gave me a speed of between 1meg and 3 meg. After finding and reading through this site I complained to Orange by phone, Email and snail mail. Yesterday my speed has gone up to a pretty constant 4.5meg. Anyway my grandkids gave me a Vista laptop for Christmas and with the help of this site I have set up a wireless connection to the live box. So this morning I tested the pc and got a reading of 4.5meg, I then run a test on the laptop and got a reading of 6.9meg. Anybody got any ideas about this difference?
Normally you should get a better signal via an ethernet cable than via wireless.
Vista allocates it's own MTU and RWIN settings but XP's needs tweaking by you with the help of DR TCP.
This could be a reason for the difference, read the "MTU and RWIN Tweaks" link. But before changing anything find out what the recommendations are first.
Also it depends on what speedtest you used. Some estimate the overall speed and can be known to give odd results on occasion. It's best to run a few speedtests on a variety of sites to get a good view of your connection overall.
