I have been with freeserve/wanadoo Orange ever since the freeserve started.i used to have a 1 meg broadband package which i had from when they started providing broadband. As i never had any complaints from Orange about going over my usage allowance i never bothered to upgrade it.On this package I got a download speed of about 1000kb/s which i was perfectly happy with.
However last year i decided to take advantage of the free broadband off with a mobile contract and pay the £5 extra for the max package. As soon as i took up this package my speed dropped like a stone to about 300kb. Despite countless phone calls to Orange they maintained that this was the best i could get from my line.
This week i called Orange to cancel my broad band and get mac code within 24 hours my speed jumped to 1500kb.
Call me a sinic but I can only assume that because the broadband was free then it was obviously throttled back deliberately!
I know how you feel, was also with Freeserve, Wanadoo, pretty much from the start, and was happily paying Wanadoo £15 a month for 2mb broadband untill Orange offered to give me the EXACT same connection for free. Since then i've had nothing but problems.
Even when i started paying £5 a month for the apparently "unlimited" connection there were no improvements.
Interesting. Just ordered my MAC code and was immediately offered FREE for 6 months and then £9.99 for another 6 months (12 month contract = £5 per month).
Have to admit was tempted but I think I'm gonna go to 02 and give their one a go.
Pretty sure I can get a faster speed from them as it's LLU and Orange tell me the fastest the line can go is 4mb and Orange can only offer 2mb ???? - funny that for 2 weeks last year I got 6500+ down (or so my router told me).

It really does depend on whether Orange LLU is sorted at your local exchange.
Quoted spec. for my line is 4.5Mb but I see a consistent 5.6 - 5.8.
I just can't understand why Orange can't bring all their LLU'd exchanges up to the same performance level......why do I have a good service in North Bristol yet many others around the country continue to tear their hair out ? My local exchange isn't big, serving less than 20,000 premises.
If Orange could identify the answer then there might be fewer problems.

line speed is determined by the distance u r from ur local exchange. plus line speed rate can change as each exchange will have so much speed and the more people log on to internet less speed the local exchange cane spread between line. my is an engineer for BT and that is what he told me
