I am now delighted to say i have finally fixed my Orange email problem.
As everyone else reports i am able to recieve email fine, no problems. However sending email was proving a problem, sometimes it would work, other times it wouldnt. (I finally managed to find out, that this is due to the sheer amount of emails being sent through the Orange email servers, it cant cope and this results in either loss of emails, or a severe delay).
There are 2 fixes:
Fix 1 If you dont have your own email server (Domestic Users)
This first fix, as reported by other people, involves signing up to a service such as http://www.authsmtp.com (or google "smtp service")
Fix 2 If you have your own server / email server (Business Users)
Basically, Orange blocks all 3rd party "port 25" traffic (for spam reasons), so you can only email via their smtp server, which is the whole problem in the first place, it doesnt work. Therefore you have to open PORT 26 on your email server, and thus change the settings in outlook to use SMTP PORT 26, also if you have any firewalls on your server you need to open up PORT 26.
If you use WHM/CPANEL, log in as root and goto the Service Configuration -> Service Manager and tick the bottom option "Exim on another port", thats it.
If you use IPTABLES as your server firewall, log in to the command line (SSH) as root, and...... execute this command, replacing SERVER_IP_HERE with your server ip...
Then enter "service iptables restart" into the command line and press enter and then after its done rebooting port 26 will be open and will route all connections to port 25 and the server will treat them as if the connection was to port 25.
As much as i hate Orange, in all fairness to them, blocking port 25 as standard is a good way to block all this spam we get. It means they can monitor all emails sent, and if an Orange account is spamming, they have better control to suspend that account and thus help the anti-spam cause.
HOWEVER, whats the point in that, if our emails wont work?
If only they made this info (we found out above) easily available so we all didnt waste hours and hours of our life running round in circles.
PS: if your thinking of leaving Orange through this reason alone, think again, as most other ISP's also have the same policy, but i can relate to you if its through endless other problems, as i've experienced.
Moral of the story is "You get what you pay for" And free or £5 per month broadband isnt the way to go......

Good advice fulleffect
Not all ISP's block port 25 mainly the big ones, most of the smaller ISP's never do Be have started offering a free static IP on certain packages which means as soon as you request one and is implemeted port 25 is automatically unblocked.

Hi sweeperdog
Yes Be do block port 25 (unless you request a free static IP) most do especially the large ISP's (who don't usually have a free or paid for option of a static IP) the smaller ones don't usually block port 25 and a few give a static IP as standard.

Its a pain changing email addresses but using Gmail is much better it by passes your ISP's smtp server and uses port 465 or 587 and is brilliant for spam thats what i did when i was with Orange my freeserve email address was unusable because of the amount of spam, or get your own domain i use Purple Cloud starts at £5 a year depending on what package and can use smtp port 225 you can also use aliases for sites you don't trust, either way you never have to change your email address again.

Daz Thankyou for your explination i have had my web hosts open ports 26, 587 and 1025 to no avail i cant telnet to any or send mail it seems only port 80,110 and 21 function as they should. does your access to port 26 still work were any setting in the livebox needed to be changed? please help me if you can i am at my wits end
1) Firewall on your pc - Make sure it allows port 26 connections
2) Firewall on your livebox - same as above
(I dont actually use my livebox, i decided to drop kick it off my wall one day, then figured i was better off using a better router such as DLINK, so unfortunatly i cant help you with any settings on your livebox, however, try temporary disabling your livebox firewall as a test)
3) Firewall on your hosts server, if you CANT telnet to port 26 on your host, this is more than likely a server firewall issue.
E.G:
In windows...
GOTO > START > RUN > type CMD > black box will open > type TELNET SERVER_IP PORT
i.e: TELNET 64.233.167.99 26
If port 26 is open on your server, you will see it connect and display a welcome message of some discription.
4) And finally in Outlook,
Click > Tools > Accounts > Double click the account you are trying to configure > Click on the MORE SETTINGS button > click OUTGOING SERVER tab > Make sure MY OUTGOING SERVER (SMTP) REQUIRES AUTHENTICATION > and finally on the same window select the option USE SAME SETTINGS AS MY INCOMING MAIL SERVER > thats it, click OK and close/reopen outlook and try again
Hopefully one of the above should work, as long as your host as 100% OPENED PORT 26.
As a precursor to probably jumping ship I obtained a googlemail account and added a second mail account in Outlook Express using googlemail settings. I hoped I could flip between Orange servers and googlemail servers by altering the default but so far no success. I've looked thru various replies here but with my limited knowledge couldn't reach a conclusion so:-
Does Orange allow access to googlemail POP and SMTP servers using ports 995 and 465 with SSL?
If so do I have to delete my Orange mail acount in Outlook Express in order to use the googlemail one?
If so do I have to delete my Orange mail acount in Outlook Express in order to use the googlemail one?
If I understand correctly you want to download from Orange webmail and Googlemail into Outlook Express ?
I do the same and all I did was follow the Googlemail procedure when I created the Gmail address. This works perfectly without deleting or changing anything in OE.

On the servers tab in the GMail account In OE make sure below Outgoing Mail Server "My server requires authentication" is ticked then click "Apply>OK
Also make sure you have activated POP3 in the GMail web settings online.
