After experiencing horrendous non-connection probjems with Orange, I decided to switch to BT Broadband. I've been using BT Option 3 for over a month now and the service has been excellent. By comparison, the quality of Orange's service and customer support were vile and degrading.
For reference, at the time of writing, Orange still haven't removed the tag on my original telephone line (more than 2 months since it was "closed"). Fortunately, because I have a second phone line, I was able to have my BT broadband enabled on it. Otherwise, I would still be phoning and waiting. Ofcom haven't helped in this matter, nor has anyone else. Orange is displaying the kind of business attitude that one might more readily find in a third-world country.
I've been with BT now since 1998 and as far their actual Broadband service is concerned have never had any major problems. The few minor problems I've had have been resolved promptly. I use their BT Option 1 service and, as a web designer, upload and download masses of files to and from various web sites and never hear a murmour from BT. In fact having just signed up for another 18 months they've cut my bill from £17.99 a month to £14.99 (2nd year on the trot they've cut my bill) and are sending me their BT Fusion/Vision (whatever it's called) equipment totally free of charge. I like the fact that as a loyal customer thay're rewarding me. I wonder what they're going to offer me in 18 months time?
