Has anyone had any problems with email not being received at all? During the last week or two, friends have claimed to have emailed me and nothing has ever turned up.
If something does arrive, it is now frequently delayed - I tested it by getting someone to send a one line email to two different email addresses (one being Orange) and the Orange one took about two hours to arrive.
I've emailed Orange about this but so far no response.
I have a domain name and have never routed my mail to my wanadoo address for this very reason. They even provide a decent POP3 box (so it is held internally with them). Even more nice is the way I have actually just transferred my domain to them from 123reg for no cost and got this POP3 box too is amazing
If you're thinking of ever leaving Orange I'd strongly recommend getting a domain name too as it saves changing your email address every time you change ISP

I'm experiencing anything up to a 24+ hour delay in my Orange emails being received and up to 10 hours for replies to reach me. It happens more often than not.
So for urgent emails I've actually resorted to using an address I've had since I first got dial-up 7 years ago!
I only started trying to use the Orange address when my last ISP (Nildram) finally (and without warning) finally deleted my account after 5 months. I knew it would come but they could've informed me in advance.
Anyway, the Orange address seems a waste of time...

I thought Orange blocked non standard SMTP ports? I've moved my domain from 123reg and bought a couple of POP3 boxes. They also give you the choice of sending mail via their SMTP servers, but the connection just times out (on the standard port)

Im with Purplecloud their alternative ports are 225 and 587 as well as 25.
If you use AVG Free edition and you have enabled it to scan your outgoing mail (SMTP) that will most likely be the cause of the timing out.
Are you using an alternative port?.

So Sweeper/Steve, if I get a domain name and email address from somewhere else, is there any way I can then send emails from my pc (using Thunderbird) but bypassing Orange's outgoing mail server (as it's so slow) or am I restricted to using webmail for sending?
Hope this makes sense - I have a reasonable amount of computer knowledge but am no expert!

Hi Pilch
I use Purple Cloud which offers alternative ports if your ISP blocks port 25 and yes you can use Thunderbird, im sure others will give you more recommendations

My email/news client (Turnpike from the days of being an ex Demon customer) doesn't seem to allow me to change the outgoing SMTP port. All I do know is that the connection to mail.daily.co.uk (the name of the outgoing server) just hangs even with firewall and antivirus off

No you just do it in whatever email client your using ie: OE Tools > Accounts > Mail highlight what account your changing click Properties > Advanced Tab and change the port there.
