I was wondering how Orange can get away with misleading customer regarding line speeds.
When you put in your telephone number and postcode the system says you line support at least 5mbps.
I know my line will support a maximum of 5mpbs, so in reality 3mbps would be an acceptable speed.
I think the words 'at least' are highly misleading as one would expert 5 to be the minimum speed.
I called customer services but the guy didn't want to know (no surprise there then!!!!) and said they are not misleading customers. I pointed out that virtually ever other ISP in the country will quote 'fastest possible speeds' and no minimum speeds.
As for the principal, I do agree with what you're saying
Do you know for sure you can get those speeds either with a previous ISP or Orange ADSLMax (pre LLU) ?

In relation to English grammar, "At least" and "Up to" are the least misleading words used by Orange. Also "Fair Use Policy" is not particularly misleading when not used in conjunction with Usage Allowance.
Words such as "Usage Allowance" are misleading because, unless my English grammar has deserted me, this infers that "an allowance has been allocated for use". But no actual allowance value has ever been officially allocated.

Depends on what the check with BT shows and then it's then a matter of interpretation.
Also there is the little part below the speed section...

Remember, this is a predicted speed. Your actual speed is determined by the quality of your phone line and internal wiring, the type of modem you use and even the time of day
Problem is that they're estimates, I don't know the details of where it gets them exactly but they really all come from BT in the end and even then they should be taken with a pinch of salt no matter what provider you choose.
What if behind the scenes the system is saying speeds of 4.5-7.5 meg, it could be BT are siding with caution where as Orange are taking a more optimistic view. Maybe the data is out of date or they're working off general area rather than specific line details. It's hard to know for sure without know exacty where the information comes from.
