Ive been lurking around here for a while now as i've been suffering the wonders of Orange 8 meg broadband. Anyways long story short , ive been getting the dissconnetions etc ever since the 8 meg switch on so after a few calls to the tech support which was a waste of time, we decided go go eslewhere. No problems with cotracts as we have been with freeserve, wanadoo, orange for some years.
so today i call to get my MAC code and im put onto a guy in this country <no supprise> now the fun bit.
First he trys to tell me im on a" 512 connection, and that its dissconecting because although my line is 7.2 meg my package is 512k so im trying to get 7.2 meg thru a 512 package which causes it to dissconect". I couldnt quite believe what i was being told so i tried to get him to explain what he ment by package. he said that altho my line is 7.2 meg i never called to change my package. I then told him i changed it to 2 meg over the internet a few years back and i was charged for donig so. i the recieved an email saying i had been put onto the fastest speed i can get (7.2 meg) and that i need to do nothing.
This didnt stop him though... he started again with "well your still trying to get 7.2 meg thru a 2 meg package."
Again i asked him to explain what he ment, he was getting anoyed now lol and started going on about how i couldnt get 7.2 meg through my modem, i told him im using a belkin wireless router, so he then changed his story to well your trying to get 7.2 meg thru ur usb you need to upgrade your package.
I know a fair bit about computers, altho not much about the workings of broadband, but this im sure is rubish. I never had a problem with the speed of my conneciton, i tested it a few times and it was very good. Seems to me that he was just trying to get me into a new contract so i would be stuck for another 18 months.
So do you think i have it right? If i do then i plan to report Orange. They can't be allowed to make this rubish up to keep people signed up.

Hi mate,
First of all the usb is only used so that your computer can reconize (poor spelling) your modem. It does not send traffic down it. Am guessing that you plug a etherent cable into your modem and your computer and then you plug a cable from the modem to your BT filter (this is your broadband cable). Now reguardless of what speed they say you have etc when they "upgrade" your service this usually means that have upgraded the line speed.
So the advisor was talking total crap in my eyes. Just tell him you have a ethernet cable plugged into your computer from your modem and that the usb is only used because the modem doesn't have its own settings page i.e (http:\\192.168.1.1, thats the generatic one), and it needs its own drivers via the usb cable so that windows can reconize it.
Well contrary to my initial impressions I can now have my MAC code and leave Orange.
Yippeee.
But the question arises, who is a decent ISP right now?
It doesn't help that I am in Northern Ireland and so some deals do not apply here
(although for once we are in line for a little bonus - we are supposed to be the first to get C21N by the end of next year - crash test dummies?! Hmmm.)

Hi
To avoid signing up to an ISP you will regret do some research heres some ratings and comments and here check out the ISP's forums if you havn't already it should give u some sort of idea of who to consider i think you will find the ISP's with 1 month contracts are more reliable, there is also some reviews here im sure others here will give you some links too.
Good Luck

basically if Orange have changed you to LLU they would have upped your line that it can take but the package would be capped to a certain speed. what i would suggest you doing is to go on Orange website and log onto the member centre and try and change your package, it will tell you what you are paying for your package and what your speed is and what your usage is, you can then confirm whether the guy you were speaking to was teling the truth or making things up.
