This is probably a stupid question but I can't seem to find an answer on the net.
The power supply to my Livebox failed the other day - worked for a good four-five years, but when I unplugged it there was the plastic burn smell, and a slight melt down one side. It is a 15v 5amp rating. I plugged a 12V adaptor in (the only one I had in the house) which at least told me that it wasn't the Livebox that had failed (i.e. it lit up), but the livebox wouldn't work on that low voltage.
So I trogs off to Maplins for a 15v power supply; however, this is 15v, 3amps, the only type they do. The gadgie behind the counter says he's sure it will work. Plugged in, the Livebox fires up and all is well and I'm connected again.
However....my broadband speeds seem to be slower. I'm only on a crappy old 1mbps exchange anyway, so the speeds are nowhere near what a modern exchange would deliver, but still it does seem noticeably slower. I'm still getting 'Connection excellent, 54mbps' message from my wireless adaptor software..
Is it possible that the reduction in the amp rating (5 to 3) is affecting the connection in anyway?
I wouldn't have thought so but it's possible went the adapter gave up the ghost it effected the livebox to a degree. Depending on what connection you're on it could have caused it a minor connection problem that reduced the speed to try and keep it stable.
Running a BT speedtest and/or checking the line stats on the livebox config will help confirm this or not. ( http://speedtester.BT.com/ )
You can always call Orange and ask for a new power supply, they should just send one out for you, least that way you know it's the right model.
