But if I download something (say using freedownloadmanager) I get no more than 116 KB/s, which is exactly what I got on my capped 1meg package. Surely I should be getting more than 116?
Your 2752 sync rate means the best IP profile you could get is 2 meg, if it's not stable then that could easily drop lower.
Also how long has it been like this? If you're in the first 10 days then you'll need to wait until the line training is complete as the profile can act a little odd during that time.
Try running a BT speedtest ( http://speedtester.BT.com/ ) and see what the downstream rate and IP profile are.

I've got a couple of days left before my 10 days are done.
The thing I don't understand is that if it says I'm getting 2 meg, then why aren't I?
Where do these numbers in the Livebox come from?
Why are my downloads still capped at 116 kB?
Will that change after the 10 days?
If you go to the speedtester link Elhana posted, then this will help answer your query, as it will give information about your profile
I should add that prior to my upgrade I was something like 1152 down and 288 up.
OK, here's the info I got from a test done at 1300:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1000 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3424 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 930 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
So this test says that me downstream *should* be 3424, but I am only getting 930!
My Livebox is giving me better numbers today...
Noise margin (dB) : 6.0
Attenuation (dB) : 60.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 3904 (I know this is a theoretical maximum that I'll never get)
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 3424 448
The last numbers are the same as from the BT speedtest.
So, even though both the speedtest and the Livebox claim 3424, I am still stuck at about 1 meg. I really don't understand what's going on here.
Does this mean that Orange is still capping me?
Or will I get a better speed when my 10 day training period is over in a day or so?

Standard IPStream 1 meg fixed speeds.

Not quite. The downstream is what is established but like attainable you never run at that speed on ADSL Max, the IP Profile is the limiting factor, in this case 1 meg. It's a way of stabilising the connection because of how it now works.

Thats ok, reasonable stats for your length of line, although the varying downstream maybe "slight" cause for concern. It normally varys but too much can cause the system to limit the speed because it's not as stable as it should be. Don't worry about it too much at this point though.

Lovely and confusing isn't it. It's the profile that is causing the speed to be restricted, it's not static, it will move up if it can within 3 days, providing the downstream rate stays at or above certain levels.
2272kbps+ 2Mbps
2848kbps+ 2.5Mbps
3424kbps+ 3Mbps
If the downstream rate dropped to 2752 like in your first post then the system would set the IP profile to 2 meg at best until it showed 3 days of running at 2848 or better.

Orange, no, it's part of the automated BT ADSL Max system. Profiles can be a bit weird during the first 10 days so you'll want to wait until 3-4 days after to be sure, also you might want to keep an eye on the downstream rate so you can check how much it fluctuates and if it goes any lower.

Other than that it should correct itself in time.
You are fantastic!
Thank you very much for explaining this.
Now something interesting just happened.
My @ light began flashing slowly and the noise margin had dropped to 1.5dB. OK, that must be my daily dropped connection (always seems to happen late afternoon).
I left it alone for a while and it could not sync the line again so I unplugged the Livebox for a minute then plugged it in again.
Now my stats are
It's like it being held back as peak time approaches. Oh well, it's still potentially better than 1 meg.
Now I'm sure I read somewhere that you shouldn't intefere with the 10 day training period in any way (such as switching the Livebox off) otherwise the 10 days will be 'reset' and the whole process starts again. Mind you, I also remember reading that it didn't matter what you did during the training period.
So I have another question for you experts.
Was it OK to unplug my Livebox, or should I have just left it alone hoping that it would sync the line again?

"The first 10 days
During the first 10 days of Max your phone line will be automatically measured to establish what speed it can support, and in particular at what speed the line will remain stable. You will see your sync speeds vary, and commonly may experience disconnections and some instability of your connection. During the testing period you should frequently make new connections to the Internet so these tests can take place. It's a good idea to power off/on your modem or router when doing this - this will force your equipment to reconnect."
So it seems that unplugging your livebox is not a disaster.
I too had a dropped connection in the evening and reconnected at a lower rate. I powered off this morning and had a better reported speed on reconnection. However, all of this is pretty meaningless until the training period is over as only then will you see an actual speed increase.
However, from my above link...
"The first data rate increase should take place within 75 minutes of your receiving Max service. Your BRAS profile however, changes only when a stable connection has been made for a period of time; this may be up to 3 days in some cases. The BRAS Profile will also drop should the line rate decrease significantly."
I'm pretty sure I got Max on Friday morning when the livebox began reoporting higher down/upstream figures. I still have not seen a d/l above 120kB/s yet. But as has been said, the increase *will* happen in time.
It is a good link, I usually use that for the table of sync to profile speeds.

Yes but I'd be careful not to reconnect it "too" much. Generally I'd say 2-3 times a day maximum.
If you did it too much, worst case senario that shouldn't be too easy for someone to cause, is the line is labelled as unstable and is capped by BT at a much lower rate, usually a fixed 1/2 or 1 meg speed.

Well thats the thing about the training period, changes to the IP Profile can and do happen but equally they can act a bit strangely and not change until the end of the training.
