< Livebox Issues? ~ Connecting router upstairs but phone downstairs

Hi,

I'm looking for advice on how best to connect the livebox in the upstairs office when the phone (BT box) is downstairs.

I will have to run a cable upstairs, but which way is best to do it?:

- Insert a phone splitter then run phone cable upstairs (so, downstairs the connection is: BT box - splitter - adsl filter - phone, upstairs will be: phone cable - adsl filter - router)

or

- Insert ADSL filter, and buy extended filter-to-router cable (name?) to run upstairs.

Thoughts?

Yeah right !!!!

If the average phone line doesn't count as "1000's of feet of very thin wire" then I don't know what does! Wink

RJ11 cable. Best way to be sure is take the cable to the shop with you so you can make sure it matches.

But the number of reports of "no connection" posted on this site is evidence that their broadband doesn't "transmit over 1000's of feet".

Hi
From past experience I would suggest you disconnect your BT cable and box from downstairs, re-route it outside the building and relocate it near your computer after drilling a new hole on the outside wall at a slightly upward angle.

You could route an extension like this but as has been said repositioning the BT master socket is a serious no-no. Any problems and BT spot that the box has been moved and you're in for a serious bill to put it back where it originally was I believe.

Besides, I want to keep the phone downstairs and the computer upstairs.

Why can't you keep the Livebox somewhere convenient downstairs and go wireless ?

My Belkin router is hidden away behind a bed upstairs which still allows me to use my laptop in the back garden........when it's not raining of course.

Unfortunately there is no convenient place for it: shortage of electrical sockets in the hall and a poorly located BT box.

This way, I can hardwire the desktop into the router (which I prefer), and when I need to go wireless I can use my laptop.

Just thought it might be easier to cable it downstairs into another room with a short run rather than cable it with a 5 metre run into an upstairs room.

Sounds like the best option would be to get a phone extension put in for the upstairs, it wires into the back of the main phone socket, needs a filter to be used, lets you have the livebox near the desktop and a potential phone socket too if you want to use it.
