Set up the Livebox correctly, slow flashing light, checked by phone (@50p/min) that username & password are as previously agreed but still get message that they are not recognised. Tried to set uo Livebox manually but get Bad Gateway. Read some of your problems and solutions relating to this and tried a few. But can't change username to a different server such as @bb.freeserve.co.uk as the 'next' button is greyed out if anything other than @fs is used. Loathed to call India again and go through their script.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
ps Am I right in assuming that my dial-up connection doesn't have to be live for any of this?
If you have a livebox then support isn't 50ppm. The software may only allow entry of @fs but there's an easier option that will allow you to try the other domain options.
Make sure you're connected to the box, prefrably by ethernet,
Into internet explorer put in the address 192.168.1.1,
Click the link on the page,
Enter "admin" as both the username and password and ok it,
Select my services and then internet in the lefthand menu,
In the connection login and connection password boxes enter the details before hitting validate.
Once done check the @ light if it goes solid its connected, if it doesn't check the page for a status, if it's anything in progress click refresh at the bottom until it says one without.

Thanks for your reply. I had to connect to the internet via my dial-up line as the Livebox isn't working (the reason for using this site in the first place!) The IP address you provided gave me a 'Gateway Timeout' message. So I am no further forward. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
(I'm not even sure how to reply, I hope this is correct as it is not obvious to the man in the street.)
Thanks
Ok lets start over a bit as something's wrong there.
Connect the ethernet cable between the livebox and PC,
Go into the control panel and then network connections,
Right click Local Area Connection and select status,
Does it show as connected or another status?
If you can go onto the support tab, what doe this show for address type and IP address?
Perhaps I could describe exactly what I'm doing as there might be some assumptions, like I'm a whiz with the internet.
- I have to be logged on to the internet via the dial-up connection to enter the IP address
- I then enter the IP sequence exactly as given in the Address area and after http:///www.
You don't need to be connected to use that address but you do need to have the livebox turned on and connected to the PC.
It may be worth going into internet options, connections tab and setting it to never dial the connection if the dialup box keeps interrupting things. You can still tell it to dialup manually it just shouldn't automatically appear.
Thanks Elhana & Keith for staying with this.
I followed each suggestion but got 'Cannot find server' in the heading and 'The page cannot be displayed' on the screen each time.
I feel that we have moved on a little.
If the message is true, is there another server that can be tried?

TO TEST NETWORK CONNECTION:
Are you sure that you have a network card in the computer - I know it sounds daft - but they look very similar to modems.
Is the network card turned off in the bios.
(Start - All Programs - Accessories)
Open Command Prompt
Ping 192.168.1.1 -t
Control C to stop
For info purposes this command does a continuous loopback ping to the router. Without the -t it only does it 4 times. Its a means of quickly checking connectivity between PC and router.
If no connection will say:
Destination host unreachable.
Check into Network Connections through the control panel. Double click your local area connection. What status does it show? If connected go into the support tab, what does it show in there?
You could also right click the connection and repair it.
There could be a problem with network cable - try another one. Also if you are in the red socket on the Livebox try the yellow one.
There could be a problem with network card or drivers - first try re-installing drivers - re-boot computer.
If still no luck I would physically take network card out of computer - re-boot computer, then turn off. Re-install network card and allow XP to to find and install it.

Many thanks for the advice, whilst trying it (the ping worked perfectly) I managed to get through using the yellow socket and broadband is now up and running.
I probably would have cancelled the contract had it not been for the advice from this site.
Thanks again. I may need more advice when I move to wireless!
