Another victim of Orange and their flse promises here. I have the dreaded ppp server down message. Its been like this for 10 days now and there is no sign of it being fixed - just the usual call centre crap - ring back in 5 days etc.
Anyway, Ive read here and in other places that some people are getting back online by using aother wireless modem to unjam the livebox and so on. I dont hav another wireless modem BUT I do have my cable modem from my Virgin broadband (still active for another few weeks thank god!!!).
Is there any way I could use the cable modem to rejig the livebox etc. Ive tried all the usual reset stuff with the livebox to no avail.
The cable modem I have is a motorola surfboard SB5101E and using the ethernet cable Orange provided I can (currently am) using the Virgin connection via my laptop.
oh, one thing to add, there is no reset button on thecable modem if that makes any difference. just a power socket, usb port and ethernet port. I tried going from BT line to cable modem with ethernet cable and then using the usb cable to go from modem to laptop - however, then i get prompted to install Virgin/blueyonder drivers onto my laptop - not sure i wanna do this as the set up completely bypasses Orange and their livebox
I assume when you did BT socket -> modem -> computer via LAN that you changed your login details to match Orange. Sorry I don't know the ins and outs of that and whether it is locked to your cable provider or not, but I wouldn't expect to be able to switch it over to the BT line and put it back again without changing at least your login name
As for a modem kicking the the livebox into life, then I am sure Orange would love to hear that because I find my livebox can't even synch with the exchange after using a proper router. (I had to try the livebox route otherwise tech support refused point blank to sort out my problem)
the modem in question has a slot for a usb cable to go i guess from modem to pc. is this what you are talking about? I could plug the power in and then go from modem to laptop with the cable. My question would be though how is this going to get the livebox reset/unjammed?

May be talking at cross purposes if the modem has a RJ11 cable which plugs into a phone line then you can use it.
There is a cable modem that does not plug into a phone line but picks up the internet from cable like cable digital tv.
Full set of instructions, which may or may not work, the use of the modem can reset the exchange end:
PPP SERVER DOWN
This is is generally a network/exchange fault.
First re-enter your username and password.
Others have solved this by installing another router or their Speedtouch 330 modem instead of Livebox - getting a connection - disconnecting - then going back to Livebox. There are several reports of this working. It appears that the network and Livebox jam up.
Others have also solved the problem by changing the normal settings:
I understand what your saying to try but im a bit worried of the consequences.
ysee I have a cable modem that like you say picks up the internet thru the cable like it does for tv etc. It has a socket for both an ethernet cable and a usb cable. Now, blueyonder(Virgin now) use a box placed on your wall and then feed the cable thru the house to the machine.
To get everything connected using the cable modem i have to do the following. BT wall socket ---> adsl filter. adsl filter ----> cable modem(using ethernet cble). usb cable from cable modem to laptop.
at this stage i get prompted to insert my blueyonder disk for the drivers etc. This is what i am concerned over. for one, will it actually work cos im not using the actual cable (big white internet serving one from the street/blueyonder box) and surely installing blueyonders drivers isnt going to fix the problem with Orange is it? my confusion here is that if i am just installing blueyonder internet via my BT line, how do i then access/change my Orange log on details or the livebox configuration.
i hope i have explained what i mean clearly. any more help much apprecited.

I'm familiar with Blueyonder, my first answer was right it will not work because that modem picks the Broadband up from the cable. You need a modem or router that picks up the Broadband from the telephone socket.
Ask around a lot of people will have a spare USB modem hanging around. I normally use a spare Talktalk one but don't put the Talktalk software on use just the driver and Orange username and password.
nearly 30 days has gone by so i should get out of the contract without any cancellation fees. However, I'm after some advice. My Virgin connection is due to be cut off on oct 9th. my 30 days of inactive broadband will be on oct 13th. what should i do? ring Virgin and say i want to continue with them and hope all goes smoothly getting away from Orange. i dont wanna be paying for 2 services each month (especially when i would only be getting one).
I wonder if anyone knows whether or not by ringing Virgin and saying that we want to continue are they gonna get funny and try and lure us into anther 12 month contract. i dont mind i suppose but would definitely then have to get free of Orange. I know its a bit of a ramble but i am after some advice. Bought my first house last year and this is the first major problem to ring back and forth about.
