I switched to Sky's base on Aug 15th using the MAC code given by Orange but just to be on the safe side I rang on 17th Aug. to confirm that I was cancelling their 1mb service. This they confirmed but the payment due on 18th Aug would be taken because I had to give 30 days notice, no problem with that.
So on Sept 18th can you guess what happened, yes they took a further payment from my credit card. Now did you know that the card holder cannot cancel a regular credit card charge with his card company, it can only be done with the service supplier. So Orange now agree they cocked it up, as usual, and will refund the charge next pay date in Oct, it will be interesting to see what happens.
The moral of this story is, if you are leaving Orange change your method of payment in advance to a direct debit, this way you can stop the payment before Orange plunder your account.
You do have control when paying by credit card.
Ring your bank and tell them you lost it, they will cancel it immediately and issue you with a new one.
As Orange can only take money from the old card using its number it means you would have to give them the new number before they can continue to greedily take your money.
I did actually lose my switch card this year and and the bank, they cancelled it straight away.
I'd forgotten to reinstate my payment to my ISP - Idnet and they contacted me to say they couldn't get money from me.

You're right Andy but it's a whole lotta hassle cancelling a card, and I've just gone through the trauma of changing my e-mail address so I don't want any more hassle.
I switched to Idnet with a MAC code as I was well out of contract with
Orange. After my account had been switched to Idnet Orange were still
trying it on 2 1/2 months later. They charged my closed account for 2
monthly payments plus late payment fines. Fortunately I paid by bank
account direct debit and had cancelled it as soon as the service was
transferred. Had I been paying by credit card I suspect they would still
be taking the money.
Don't think the "lost" credit card trick will work - if all you do is get a new card number then Orange's charges will automatically be applied as the credit card account still exists - you would have to open a totally new cr. card account with a new provider and close the old account.
Even then there are stories in the financial pages of people being chased years later for charges applied to closed accounts. The best route is to move to D/Debit before you start getting problems!!

I'd certainly contact the credit card provider, telling them that the payment was deducted without authorisation. I think it's likely you'll be credited rather quickly.
Technically, I don't think banks have to guarantee transactions below £100 (I could be wrong), but in my limited experience they are pretty sensitive about merchants doing things like this. A few years back Time (the old PC maker) charged me for a system disk which they supplied incorrectly. they then refused to credit me, or even to replace the disk, despite the error being entirely theirs. The credit card company intervened at my request, and sorted it out rather effectively.
