I move house 3 months ago and decided to go with wanadoo because the offered unlimited downloads for £28 and 'up to' 8mb as soon as my area was enabled. their website stated that my area was 'capable' of 2mb. I thought i'd go for it, thinking that it wouldn't be long for east sussex to be upgraded.
10 days later my modem arrives with my connection, I can only get 512kbs.
After 9 hours on the phone during that weekend, I got no where.
I'm too far away from the exchange to get 2mb. So am going to have to stay on 512kbs. I spoke to them yesterday and it looks like a long wait (at least 6 months) before my area wil be upgraded. I've already been a member for 3 months.
I've written 3 letters but the wont budge. They have offered me a downgrade package but they obviously dont understand. I want a quick connection with unlimited downloads. BT will offer me 6.5 mb but they have ownership of the exchange, which means they can go to the exchange and upgrade it for me, but i'd have to stay with them for 12 months.
I am currently trying to get out of my contract with wanadoo. I am sickened and disgusted with their customer service and their approach of 'I really dont give a F*"K'.
I am tempted to cancel my direct debit and let them issue court proceedings. Has anyone done this?
I have spoken to ofcom who told me to ask BT to send a letter confirming the 6.5 mb before I commit to buy.
These internet companies send out the equipment a few days after the cooling off period, which means you dont get chance to test the product. I called wanadoo within 10 mins of realising i had a 512 kbs rate, and these nothing I can do!
If I had known before I bought, I wouldn't have bothered!
your exchange is ADSL enabled. our test on your line indicates that your line should be able to support a line rate up to 512kbps. however, due the the lengh of your line, an engineer visit may be required, who will, where possible, supply the broadband service
out line test also inbdicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL max broadband line rate of 6.5 up to 8mb.
the actual ADSL max line rate supportable will be determined during the first 10 days of use, after which time the highest stable rate possible wil be set
what does all this mean? is it another trick, trying to make me think that BT can offer 6.5?
Yeah, bit of an odd result but thats why they're saying they can only supply 512k. Looks like you've fallen into the problem area like several other people on here, and technically Orange aren't at fault. They're providing the fastest speed BT say the line can support, 512k, though I highly doubt that figure what with the high Max level. From the looks of that it should support 2 meg.
You'd ideally need to get that updated first then the Orange systems should allow the regrade with no trouble. There is a link to an ADSL guide thread somewhere on the forums where they'll help you get the checker updated. If you can't find it I'm sure someone will post the link into here.
Well those details you posted from the BT checker are odd and likely one of them is wrong. Either you can't have 2 meg and the Max speed is way inflated, or the Max speed is right and the ADSL figure is undervalued.
What you need is to get the checker to re-evaluate your ADSL connection speed. If that gets updated Orange should then be able to upgrade your line to 1 or 2 meg.
As I said before there's a link to a thread somewhere else on here to ADSLGuide.org which gives the details of how to get this checked out.
