Has anybody else in the Chester area (exchange Code:WNCSC) had a permanent drop in download speed?
I have been getting a download speed of just over 2900 for a couple of years then on 10 September it went down to 2400 (500 less) and has stayed there ever since. I do a daily speed test and record it on the Orange Problems speed survey.

There have been absolutely NO changes to any of the settings on my PC and there are no problems shown when I check the Chester Exchange website.
In the grand scheme of things that could be contention, but have you
- noted your download synch speed before and after the event
- tried the same speed tests with thinkbroadband.com also - when my effective d/l speed was 60kpbs speedtest wouldn't even load. this site is quite heavy on resources I think
- checked to see if your profile has been pushed down http://www.speedtester.BT.com/ (since you're not on LLU)
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 2976 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2325 kbps

Ah there's the answer, the sync speed has dropped meaning you can no longer get a 3000 profile. In fact you're fairly close to the limit for a 2500 profile which is 2848, the sync dropping lower than that will get you a 2000 profile.
Have you changed anything recently? New phones, Sky, extension cables, etc? If you can you may want to try the test socket to see if your wiring is ok by seeing if the sync speed goes up.

Hi Elhana,
I did another BT Test today with the following results:
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
DSL connection rate:
448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
3712 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2276 kbps
Nothing has changed recently to any of my electrical, TVs, phone or cables, etc.
The only thing that I noticed was that my WAN IP address changed overnight before the drop in speed.
2007-09-10 7:37 AM GMT 81.77.57.47
2423 kb/s 381 kb/s 66 ms Maidenhead ~ 150 mi
2007-09-09 6:51 AM GMT 84.71.34.241
2914 kb/s 382 kb/s 48 ms Maidenhead ~ 150 mi
It has changed again (overnight) since then to my current WAN IP address but the speed has not been restored.
I am not sure what you mean by "If you can you may want to try the test socket to see if your wiring is ok by seeing if the sync speed goes up." Is there a test socket on the Livebox.
Meh, I get drops in speed from time to time. I'm guessing its contention for me, as when I was with BT it always got crippled in the evenings (and for the few months before switching, since early afternoon).
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
DSL connection rate:
448 kbps (UP-STREAM)
4096 kbps (DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 761 kbps
Now, since being on Orange, most of the time the connection's around 2800 (or slightly higher, sometimes over 3000kbps). However, twice now (that I've noticed), its dipped like that, starting at around 4pm / 2500, getting to 1.5mbit at half 6pm, and by half 8pm, what it is on that result. However, I'm guessing the first month or so the line will be up and down so, mehhh.

I checked again this morning with both speedtest.net and with the BT speedtest and my speed has dropped even further.
BT Speedtest
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate:
448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
3680 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1773 kbps
My download speed has dropped from 2914 on 9 September to only 1925(speedtest.net) or 1773(BT) in just over a week - and there have been NO changes to my PC settings or anything else in my house.
Any body have any ideas what may have caused it or having the same problems in my area (Chester Exchange - WNCSC).
If I ring India I am sure that I will get the normal run around.

I am still not sure what the "test socket" is? I have tried the livebox on a different electrical socket (long extension lead because I use a LAN connection to the livebox) but no change.
-------
My Lifebox config shows:
ADSL firmware version : A2pBT009c1.d17d
Connection mode : G.DMT
Type : Interleave
Noise margin (dB) : 10.4
Attenuation (dB) : 54.0
Attainable download rate (kbps) : 4288
ADSL status : Connected [0]
Rate (kbps): Downstream 3680, Upstream 448
WAN IP address : 62.136.185.224
Gateway : 195.92.214.11
Primary DNS server : 195.92.195.95
Secondary DNS server : 195.92.195.94
Internet protocol : pppoa
Encapsulation : VC-Mux
-------
and BT Speedtest today shows:
BT Speedtest (19 Sep)
IP profile for your line is - 2000 kbps
DSL connection rate:
448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
3680 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1787 kbps
-------
Would be grateful for any other possible reasons for the drastic drop in speed or any possible remedies.
Look at the main BT telephone linebox, if it has a removable lower half, unscrew it and remove the lower half frontplate, to the right is a socket. This is the test socket, plug into this without using a filter. Then run router and speed test.
If it hasn't got a removable lower half then you can't use the test socket method.

If you then see a drop in speed then it's either the filter or the phone cabling within your house. This could be phone extensions or that the phone cable is running close to your house ring main.

Does this mean you have to leave the bottom half hanging down or exposed all the time? Is this "test socket" the same thing that feeds any extensions that you have?

No, the bottom half plate unplugs from this socket, the router is then plugged directly into that socket so that you get a "clean" signal with no other equipment connected. You can then run router stats and speedtest to see if any phone wiring in the house or extension faults are causing problems.
