A week ago i installed Orange Broadband Starter on my sister's pc.It all works okay.when she boots up a box pops up asking her to connect,i used to have this set up and mine used to connect automatically when i booted up.How does she get it to do this, instead of having to go via this pop up box.Than You.Cumbrian
Are you using a USB Speedtouch 330 modem? (Silver, looks like a giant mouse)
The thing is with USB modems, it needs to be powered by the computer and therefore can only maintain a connection to the internet when the computer is on. Therefore when you shut down, the modem also switches off and the connection is lost.
I have to connect each time I boot up.
Has your sister had previous dial-up connections? You need to set your Speedtouch as the default connection. See Start > Connect To... > Show all connections.
Right click on the Speedtouch one and choose Set as Default.
Also, if you right click on the Speedtouch "4 squares" icon in the taskbar, and go to Options, tick the box 'Automatic start at boottime'.
That will not guarantee an auto-connect upon bootup though.
I cannot think of another way to do it, unless you use some form of script to run upon boot, but that could screw up the flimsy modem.

Yeah, just change the settings and if it still does not produce a satisfactory result, please do post here again. I'm sure someone else might be able to offer an alternative.

A piece of advice for those using any kind of modem like this :-
Because your PC is directly connected to the internet and without the protection of a router, make sure you have a good software firewall installed. I wouldn't rely on the windows one alone
Phoenix an update.she done has you said, but the box still comes up.She is okay with it she has got used to clicking connect. One other thing she mentioned, when she is on the net the connect box keeps popping up every minute or so,this gets on her nerves.after its popped up Three or four times a message comes up saying she is working off line.and she has to reconnect. How does she stay connected and stop this connect box from popping up.Thank You.Robert

Open Outlook Express click Tools>Options>Connection
and untick "Hang up after sending and recieving"
also
Click Start>Connect To>Show All Connections...
Select your Broadband account icon
Right Click>Properties
Click Options and under 'Idle time before hanging up' choose 'never'

Steve my sister is still having problems. She is okay on Internet Explorer that works okay. When she goes into Outlook Expres a box pops up asking for her Usename and Password, she fills this in and clicks okay(she cant click the Remember Me button it is greyed out) a couple of seconds later the box pops back up.It does this 4 times, then disconnects her from broadband. How does she get this box to remember her password and username,Why is the remember me button greyed out.
Open Outlook Express Tools > Options > Accounts highlight the account and click "Remove"
If that dont work its best you google it
For OE it's actually:
Open Outlook Express > Tools menu > Accounts > Mail tab > highlight the account to delete > Click the Remove button and confirm it.
After that select new, email account and enter the details. This just effects the settings stored there, it doesn't delete any email downloaded into OE.
Elhana thanks,i am going to put this on hold for a week.My sister has friends staying fo a week and she wants to wait until they have gone before trying Outlook Express again.I will let you know how she gets on.Thank You.Cumbrian
