So, since I probably can't leave ORAnGE until next January (see my previous thread for woes, rants and sniffles), I was wondering:
Has anyone here been cut off / warned for going over their measly 2GB allowance?
I'm only allowed 2GB , but I usually end up using up to 2.5GB a month on download data alone.
And another question - is this a quicker and faster way of getting away from Orange? I was up last night thinking about this - if I get cut off, will that mean I am clear to sign up to another ISP straightaway (providing my line is clear)?
Obviously I don't want to be fined or anything! Maybe just wishful thinking?

It certainly is one way to get rid of Orange!
There have been a few people post on here who have had Orange close their account as they exceeded their download limit.
A company will either close your account, usually after a warning but not in Orange's case as they conduct things their own daft ways.
Or they will charge you roughly £1 per GB over your limit.
I'm pretty sure with Orange they just terminate your account, according to other posters on here too.
This will then leave you free to goto another ISP once they have taken their tag off your line.
They have 10 working days to remove the tag.
It's worth exceeding the limt by a lot so that they close you earlier in my view.
Also if you're having problems with Orange and you're still in contract you can request your MAC code to move.
They have to give you this within 5 working days, regardless of any remaining contract.
Any money owed to them is then void as they are the ones who have broken the contract by not providing and taking your money each month.
Depends on what your problem actually is.

Now I'm just tempted to go over just to get cut off.
The problem is, I haven't had any problems with Orange, so I can't move away for free on the basis that they have breached the contract.
The only problem I have with Orange's actual service is the measly 2GB allowance - even if it was 5GB, I would be happy to stay!

Well fair enough if you haven't had any problems with Orange's service then it's a bit difficult to leave them without buying yourself out of the remainder of the contract.
Do you mind me asking why you wish to leave, I haven't seen your previous rants/posts?!
There are other packages available by Orange that incorporate a higher Gb usage.
Thing is upgrading often leads to a new contract of 12 or 18 months and that doesn't appear to be what you want.
I'm paying £17.99 for "8MB" - actually 5MB - and 2GB usage limit.
@ cosmicdance:
There's a thread a little down the page from me, but I'll explain here.
I only want to leave because of this measly 2GB allowance.
I can upgrade to the £19.99 Livebox bells and whistles package, but it's a bit of a rip-off considering Eclipse are offering me unlimited downloads for £14.99.

Errr, I think you've mis read Eclipse's packages. For £14.99 a month you get 8mbit / 2gb limit, and a month free if you're switching from another ISP.
Eclipse's 'unlimited' package is 8mbit / 40gb limit, month free when switching. That'll set you back £29.99 a month, more expensive than Orange. But if you're only after a little extra bandwidth, they have a 10gb version at £18.99.
As I mentioned in the other post, chances are you'll stay at 5mbit either way, so that shouldn't be reason to switch. 5mbit is an entirely reasonable speed for an 8mbit connection, and unless you're downloading heavilly (though with such usage restrictions you probably don't) its more than enough. Eclipse are also another 12 month contract, and the cheaper options (£14.99 for 2gb, £18.99 for 10gb and £24.99 for 20gb) have a £4.99 delivery charge for the wired router you get.
In Orange's defense, £19.99 is a reasonable price for 8mbit / 40gb, and the router is rented. Its a nice piece of kit (far better than BT's joke of a homehub) but it's actually on its own contract, and once that is up you can give Orange 30 days notice, send it back and drop the monthly fee a little (£2.08, so the monthly fee becomes £17.91).
Ah the only reason I asked was supposed to be on the equivalent of a £27.99 a month package (via a prize activation code), but somehow only 1MB was speed was available according to their checkers. Even when 8MB became available, they refused to upgrade me, and I think I was on some poxy 2GB limit then
I won another activation code, but because I'm already an existing customer their system would not cater for it. The script guys said that this was a very unusual situation for them and they did not know how to help me. In hindsight, this is a bit like the laptop offer now some people have tried using even though they are existing customers - basically I think you're screwed if you're an existing customer.
Anyway I digressed slightly. I asked since I'm on a £9.99 retainer. They asked me what my monthly usage was, and at the time it was around 2GB a month, and I can't remember what they said my new allowance would be, but he said my usage would be OK for the new package

I don't believe you can do that, the livebox is an inclusive part of the contract and the £2.08 is more a figure put on the livebox, probably for legal purposes, than a charge you can avoid. I've never heard of anyone avoiding it.
Well, nowhere in the broadband contract does it state you have to have the livebox to use the service. Likewise, the contract for the livebox rental does say you can't cancel the rental contract once its hit the start date, however, there are a number of terms for termination - cancellation of the Orange broadband contract, giving 30 days notice of wanting to drop the (rental) contract, etc.
Its worded funny and I'm sure Orange wouldn't be pleased, but we're in full legal rights to cancel the livebox and continue the Orange package. But then again, orange seem to be useless at even handling signups and this laptop fiasco, doing something like this would likely cause even more problems, like messing up the billing.
Ahh, well I figured with that with you mentioning about the speed, I thought that might be a concern for you. The Evolution package does a lot of bandwidth shaping via a priority system. Say with that cheap package, you're probably sharing an 8mbit bandwidth between 8 people. If one of those is downloading heavilly, then everyone else suffers. If everyone is trying to use it all at once, and it balances it out correctly, you'll be on 1mbit, etc. Its not the same as contention ratios, it seems to be harsher limiting. The home packages, and their Evolution Option 4, have top priority.
Likewise, downloading isn't entirely unlimited. Its subject to a fair usage policy - if you're found to be downloading a lot, or heavilly during peak (after 6pm), you'll get knocked down to a 256kbit connection. This is the reason I was so unhappy with BT - I wasn't even downloading heavilly but more often or not by the time it hit 6pm I was down to 10kb/s (infact I assume it must of been broken, I was throttled early afternoons, or weekends in their entirity, to a top speed of 30kb/s).
To be honest, it does look like a reasonable package, but if you're requiring speed (streaming music or video, gaming, downloads (to an extent, downloading an mp3 off iTunes on a 1mbit connection is still fine, just not quite as instant as a faster connection)) it'll be no good.
Oh I see. Thanks a lot; I'll bear that in mind...though it is a bit off-putting finding that out; I stream a lot of stuff and also play online games, so that's a bummer.
Dang, I don't really have any options left...maybe IDNet will be better.
