I'm a bit embarrassed to be bothering you with something so simple, but here goes:
I'm still waiting for my Livebox to be sent to be, and in the mean time have decided to try setting up a home network.
We have 2 computers in the house, and only mine is connected to the internet (via good old fashioned speechtouch modem). So I bought an ethernet crossover cable, ran it between the two computers and followed the Microsoft 'how to set up a home network' wizard. But nothing happened. Neither computer is able to acknolwedge the other. They're simply not on speaking terms. Let alone able to share the same broadband connection.
Apart from being naive (and believing in the power of Microsoft wizards), what am I doing wrong?
Any advice appreciated. You guys really seem to know your stuff.
Sounds like you probably need to go into the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings to force the IP settings.
Internet PC
IP Address: 192. 168.1. 10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
2nd PC
IP Address: 192. 168. 1. 20
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
This should allow them to talk to each other. I'm not to certain about default gateway, it's not required but if you want the 2nd PC to access the internet then you might have to bridge connections or setup Internet Connection Sharing.
BTW These settings ideally need to be set back to obtain automatically for an ethernet connection to the livebox.
The default gateway essencially tells the PC how to get out of the network and onto the next, in most home user cases, onto the internet.
Not tried it with a speedtouch modem but I believe the default gateway may be the IP of the internet connected PC, although it would probably need Internet Connection Sharing turned on too.
Make sure the Line speed for the network cards are the same.
Right click My Network Places and select Properties.
Right click Local Are Connection and click Properties again.
Click the Configure... button on the General tab and then click the Advanced tab.
I have 2 machines set up with an Ethernet (BNC) connection.
Untill I put in all the addresses and line speed nothing happened.
Also make sure the Workgroup is the same, default is WORKGROUP.
