I upgraded to Orange's 2mb service. Oh dear. I game alot, mainly a fps called Call of Duty 2.
When I was on their 1mb service, I had a great ping, used to be 30, but after a few months it rose to 40 - 50. Since upgrading to their 2mb service in an attempt to keep me as a customer, they offered me the 2mb with the livebox.
Since then my ping has risen to around 70 - 80 consently, and 110+ in servers outside of the uk. My download speed has not increased much, 1mb service saw me downloading at 120kb. 2mb service I download about 140kb, not much increase, but a lot of slowing down.
I live in Northern Ireland, so cable internet is not available in my area yet, so the internet comes down the telephone end. There is an exhange about 3 mintures walk from me, which about 10 miles away is the main exchange for the county I live in.
Is there anything I can do to sort this? Ring Orange and ask them what is going on, or will this lead me chasing my tail .
Is it better to just find a better provider? If so who would be the best ISP for Northern Ireland?
I'm suppose to be on 8Mb BB in London. For the past week, I've barely got above dial-up speeds. There may be many people who will say how bad Orange s, and that's their shout, in fact I feel it's a terrible service, but you want a straight answer, you can have one. Get out of your contract as soon as you can. You'll find no real help or assistance going through the usual channels you might.
As to ISPs in N.I., I'm afraid I can't help you but some one else will, I'm sure.
One thing you may want to check is if you're on ADSL Max and if the livebox shows interleaving as on. That would explain the increased ping times to a degree. Also are you using a wireless connection? They can sometimes introduce these sorts of issues compared to a direct wired connection.
