(The strange-looking wedge thing has been skulking around in the corner of my room for too long now, I'm sure it's goading me..., maybe some Orange induced psychosis coming on!!)
ok, I plugged it in, installed it, and it seemed to work ok. Getting speeds of 4.2 meg up from 3 with the speedtouch.
BUT - I have 2 problems
1 - when I turned my pc off then on again, it seemed to forget the livebox completely. I couldn't connect at all until I ran the livebox installation cd again - now its working fine. I don't really want to leave my pc on all the time - any ideas what's happening??
2 - tried to connect my laptop using a netgear wireless adaptor - put the livebox in pairing mode, but my laptop just doesn't get any signal from it - the 2 devices are literally right next to each other. Does this mean the wireless bit of the livebox is just dead??

I assume you're connecting that PC through a wired connection. After a restart go into the control panel then network connections, right click the local area connection and hit status. Does this say connected or something else? Then click on the support tab and let us know what the address type and IP address are.

It's possible, is the adapter picking up any networks/has it done previously?
If it does work then next you'd probably need to change wireless channel.
Configure livebox, access link, username/password both "admin", security, wireless connection. Change the channel in the dropdown, 7 and 13 are usually fairly good as they're essencially bands away. Once it's back to the first page rescan with the adapter and see if it can find the livebox.
thanks a lot for your help elhana - I've sorted out the first problem, and the desktop seems to be connecting fine via the ethernet cable.
My laptop is now 'seeing' the livebox, but I still can't pair with it. Bizarrely, the MAC address is different to what is written on the bottom of the livebox, but the address stated in the configuration program is the same, so I'm sure I'm picking up my livebox and not someone else's!. I've managed to connect, but I get a windows error message saying I have 'limited or no connectivity'.
I wonder if it is a problem with my wireless adaptor, so I'm going to try updating the drivers.
thanks for all the help guys but I think I am truly beaten!
I've gone through the Orange help pages, I've changed the network connection settings, and updated the wireless adaptor drivers.
I'm wondering whether the signal from the livebox keeps cutting out - in the netgear connection wizard it shows you the signal strength - it seems to pick up a signal, which then cuts out, and then comes back again, and repeats like that.
When I try to get windows to connect, it says 'acquiring network connection', then 'greys out' (as if the signal disapears) then comes back again. Eventually it just says 'limited or no connectivity'.
I've tried getting windows to renew the IP address but it tries to do this indefinitely without suceeding.
Unfortunately I can't test either the wireless adaptor or the livebox with other equipment to see which one is wrong, because I don't have any other wireless devices.
I assume that if I phone Orange they will blame the adaptor and if I phone netgear they will blame the livebox...
I took everyone's advice, and went through all the advice on the livebox posts, and after 7 hours solid have finally got my laptop connected wirelessly to the livebox.
The clincher was that web page which shows you the 11 channels and how they overlap. I realised that my channel was overlapping with a couple of neighbours, and when I changed it, it was fine.
Does anyone know how secure wireless is? Can I do my banking on it for example?
IT WORKS!!!!

I bet you'll be a lot quicker next time

Funny thing with the livebox is that it uses both. If you try to connect a device that only supports WEP(DS for exampla) the Livebox will use WEP. But when a WPA compatible adapter tries to connect the livebox will use WPA.
to change this go onto the liveboc(192.168.1.1
Click advanced
then click wireless.
Using WPA it's pretty secure, WEP is less so but still enough for most people. A determined hacker would be able to get in, though if you're using WPA it'll probably take them sometime to get the key.
Rang Wannadoo in april trying to change to a cheaper broadband supplier and put through to the rentention people. They promised me a free month in may as they had new packages coming at the end of may which i was promised would be competitive. They Still took there £17.99 out of my account so i rang them today. No new packages but what i did find out was as an exsisting customer paying £17.99 you are entitled to a livebox. You have to phone and demand one as they will try to fob you of saying it will be £20 for the upgrade. It is not as your already a £17.99 user you are entitled to livebox as advertised on there site Orange gimme money page
After bickering with them i managed to get my month of may refunded and am very disatisfied with there customer relations. There as been no super offers as promised in april just the same ones but called Orange Still a rip of so i am changing to a better Broadband supplier
I think the £20 is to upgrade your connection to 8 meg, not for the livebox.
The £20 is just when the package change also comes with a change to the line speed. Could be upto the 8 meg if available there or more likely taking you upto 1 or 2 meg.
