Earlier this week, I was asked to investigate a problem, which had persisted for several weeks, with Orange outgoing mail.
Being unable to resolve the issue immediately, I checked with another (Orange user) client who has also been suffering the same problem for several weeks though he has his Outlook set to 'send and receive' every 5 minutes which eventually succeeded in delivering the mail (though his longest period of 'outage' was about 36 hours).
An internet search on 'Orange email problem' revealed this excellent site which demonstrates that there is a long-term issue being suffered by many (probably most) Orange customers.
Quite clearly, the Orange outgoing servers are not coping with the volume of email but the fact that they work sporadically gives the (false, in my opinion) impression that some of the 'try this and try that' advice provided by the Orange help-desk service actually works.
In my opinion, provided that the email has worked and no changes made, since, there is noting to be achieved by messing about with Outlook Express settings, re-installing or changing to Outlook Express from another email client.
The fact that Orange, like most ISPs, don't support Outlook cannot be taken to mean that it doesn't work--if an email client worked once, it will work again.
Fortunately, I also discovered a workable solution on this site via the Outoing Mail - SMTP link displayed (in rotation) at the top of this page- I think that this is an 'affiliate' link which will help to support this site but, if not available, you can go directly to http://www.authsmtp.com/?gclid...EgodAUZPpQ which should work just as well.
Essentially, the AuthSMTP service replaces the outgoing mail server-I tested this on my own (PlusNet) account and then on the Orange accounts of my two clients.
Early days, but all are working well after 24 hours.
It may seem galling to pay for a service which you should already have but this facility solved the problem 'instantly' for an entry-level fee of just £14 per annum.
Setup instructions are very clear and the service was fully operational in a couple of minutes.
Give it a try - They do a 'money back guarantee' if you are not satisfied.
Les King - Many thanks for your advice to try the authsmtp service, it works a treat. As you say, very quick/easy to install (and I am an IT novice) and so far, on very brief acquaintance, has worked faultlessly. I heartily recommend it to anyone who's at the end of their tether on this issue.
Yes, I am pretty pi**ed off with having to pay £14 pa for something that Orange should be providing but life is short and there is only a limited part of it which I am prepared to waste on the end of a phone line to Orange.
After the hours I have spent in recent months trying to get Outlook to send emails (being convinced until I discovered this superb site yesterday that the problem was somewhere in my email settings or the software in my pc) the relief of being able to send, receive and generally manage emails and spam easily (and without having to use the awful clunky Orange webmail site) is tremendous.

Hi Les
I have also changed Outlook send and receive to 5 minutes from 10 and for almost a week I have not had one problem sending emails and I no longer have to keep changing Servers. This is a revalation, I don't understand how it has worked but 'touch wood' it has so far.

So you have my thanks - a bucket full.
Kind regards

Sorry to disappoint but I wasn't suggesting a change to sending mail every 5 minutes as a solution to the problem - Just pointing out that, by sending every few minutes, my client's mail did eventually hit the server at a time when it could be accepted.
By changing your regular send/receive from 10 minutes to 5, you will have doubled your chances of hitting the server at an opportune time (while also increasing the load on the server) but the fundamental problem is still with the Orange service.
I notice, on this forum, that quite a few people 'trying this and trying that' seem to find success but, in my opinion, this is usually a coincidence arising because the Orange email server does work sporadically.
Many of these users report the return of the problem shortly afterwards.
Two 'permanent' solutions to this problem are:
1/ Replace the outgoing mail server with something like AuthSMTP
2/ Move to another Internet Service Provider
Slightly off-topic, the other day I noticed an item on BBC News about a lady with broadband problems who successfully sued TalkTalk using the small-claims procedure which, as I understand it, can now be done on-line.
Perhaps a few Orange users should do the same and Orange might be moved to address the problem directly.
I been through the you-have-to-reset-your-account and a thousand other hoops to no avail. Can only say that your solution about the AutoSMTP works a treat. Really anoying the Orange service is so c..p and infuriating that I have to pay the annual fee on top but at least the longstanding problem was solved within 10min.

Great news - I am delighted for you
Following-up my original post, the AuthSMTP solution has been working faultlessly for over two weeks now, on my PC (ISP, PlusNet) and on those of my two clients (ISP, Orange).
One of the clients has taken his lap-top off to France where the solution is working on the French version of Orange.
If only the Orange help-desk people could take few minutes to actually investigate the problem or, easier still, to read about possible solutions on this site.
Perhaps Orange should be renamed 'Purple', after the faces of their customers.
Just wanted to say a big thanks for this fix. I have Windows Vista Mail and altho' it isn't specifically addressed on the website you refer to, it's quite easy to work out how to apply it to Vista. If not, they'll spell it out via email.
I found someone else on a different area of this website experiencing same problems and have referred them to your posting.
Thanks again, very grateful.

There is certainly something 'different' about Orange Email.
I use Thunderbird, and have several other Email accounts (Gmail etc). On POP it won't log in to Orange first time though it does to all the others, but on second try is fine.
I have the commercial version of PGP, the encryption program, running. PGP intercepts mail the same way anti-virus programs do, auto encrypting and decrypting. With outgoing Orange mail it was failing, and it was a time delay problem - unlike Thunderbird PGP isn't willing to wait for a connection and gives up. It wasn't a 100% fail, if I persisted with resends eventually I'd get lucky.
So I switched to another SMTP connection and everything is fine. In my case it was Gmail on port 587. That also solved Orange's tendency to reroute through different SMTP connections which caused PGP to keep asking if this new one was OK to use.
Thanks for this - I was at the end of my tether, based in France. Wasted anothe hour+ yesterday with Orange here, with no results, other than yes, they have a problem with 'one of their severs blocking some clients emails when sent'. They had no idea when wd be resolved, but I would know when it had been doe as the server wd automatically be sending my emails!! The worst service from them. However, installed from your suggested link and everything working instantly. Let's hope it continues and my nerves can repair themselves. Thanks again.
