Hopefully all my old problems of slow speeds, connection constantly dropping out, and paying way too much for an inferior service are now over.
I switched to Sky's basic, and free, package on Monday and after a few minor problems am now up and running, and running much faster than I used to on Orange.
If things change for the worse I'll let you all know.
what sort of speeds you getting? can you post 1 try speedtest.net
On Orange I had a nominal 2.2mb connection, it normally measured about 1.9mb. I have the Sky base which is nominally 2mb, todays measure was 1.75mb. The line will only support 3.3mb so it hardly seems worth paying for the mid. 8mb package.
2mb has been ample for my use although with a 2gb per month limit I hope the first few days high downloads have been due to McAfee software upgrades etc, and not an indication of much higher usage.
Do you mind telling me what your minor problems were? My mother in law who lives down the road (with Sky TV) is thinking of taking up this offer where you just pay £10 extra for broadband

I took the self install route and it's relatively easy, if you follow the instructions. Once installed it worked for 20 mins then locked out, it took several calls to tech. support to resolve the issue but eventually one of them talked me through clearing old cookies etc. and then it was live, and so far I'm quite happy with it, especially as it's saving me over £200 per year compared with my Orange account.
It's great to hear you've got sorted with a good cheap connection now terrierjohn.
You just don't get that with Orange, they rob, don't care and don't provide.

Just one final point for anyone leaving Orange; even though they give you a MAC code, and you use it to change ISP, and your line is disconnected from Orange and linked to your new ISP, don't assume that Orange will then cancel your account, they won't, and you can't e-mail them to cancel, they don't accept e-mail cancellations, so you have to phone them and hang on while they find a free agent. Always good to know that Orange are maximising profits for their shareholders!
