I live in a council estate flat with thick walls or god know what inside them. This means that if the router is in living room, the wireless signal in by bedroom is bad.
Two questions:
- how hard is it to set up a different wireless router with a stronger signal (if there is one) with Orange broadband?
- can I just connect some sort of signal booster device (if there is one?) to the wireless box?
I live in an old cottage with >0.5 metre thick stone walls and have no problems with my wireless router which is located in the bedroom and my laptop which is used in the downstairs rooms and in the garden.
If your house has wooden floors then you should be able to receive a good signal. I would look at another source for the problem.
I do have significant problems with my Vodafone mobile signal inside the house even though there's a mast within 1 km, this is due to the thickness of the stone walls.
If its reinforced concrete walls with metal mesh then this will have the effect of reducing the amount of signal being received. Would only expect the external walls however to be reinforced. Normally internal walls within each flat would be normal stud partition with little or no effect on signal strength.
You can buy wireless access points that can be used as repeaters. Basically you would place these in a suitable location between the main router and the remote PC.

Try changing the channel to see if that improves it i find channel 6 works best for me also wireless adaptors vary i have 2 adaptors and both vary considerably, other than that an access point as suggested is the only other option

i've bought a belkin range extender and at first it seemed to work, but then it changed the network into an unsecured network and I couldn't connect at all.
Any ideas? The Belkin extender is supposed to work with WEP.
