I called the service status line and they said there may be a problem with those connected to the "liverpool POP" but i have no idea what im connected to.
I am on the Orange unlimited service (one with the free calls and up to 8meg) although i only get around 2/3 meg because apparently im not close enough to the exchange.
How do i see which POP i am connected to? or see if my speeds could be faster (i have a feeling they could but dont know how to find out)
Well are you in or near Liverpool is the first question to answer. Also are you on a LLU connection as that problem only effects LLU from what I've seen in the internal status.
You could also try checking your number on www.samknows.com as it should tell you which exchange you're on and maybe if Orange LLU is known as being there.

I dont know how to check if i am connected to liverpool. or LLu
I know there is an exchange from VERY close but it isnt Orange so that wont be it.
We have a contract for 12 months so we cant leave now, could we leave because they arent living up to their agreement? we are paying for a service we arent getting;
Check the link Elhana posted or Here and put in your postcode it wil tell u which exchange your on.
"You are on the Longton exchange.
You are around 3.18 kilometres from your exchange (as the crow flies)."
Okay there we go. 3.18 clicks.
They said the best i can hope for is 3MB connection, but we are on the "up to 8meg" tariff so looking at it only being 3clicks couldnt we easilly get 8meg?
Not sure if thats on LLu though or not, i looked at that exchange on the other site and it says it isnt even connected to Orange.
i also am having problem with my livebox today , it stays on for about 10 mins then dissconects, every time, and i,m in lincolnshire anyone else having problems with their livebox going offline every 10 mins or so

Mine just goes off for a while then come back on randomly.
I know there is a problem with the liverpool POP but i am not sure if im connected to that, is the POP the exchange? also how do i know if i have a cap on my line by BT? because i wouldve thought i can get 8meg when im only 3 clicks away from the exchange.
Also in my livebox panel it says Attainable download rate (kbps) : 4736 but my download speed is only around 2000Kbs something is up me thinks, either with Orange or BT giving me a cap
We rang them and they told us the usual rubbish, check connections, it could be the filter blah blah blah.

Well from a technical standpoint a 3.1km line would at best give about 6 meg, your line is always longer than the figure given so 3 meg may be a reasonable figure for the line.

there is the URL for the exchange i am apparently connected to.
I'd guess you're not on LLU. That exchange had a pre-reg meaning BT originally thought it may not be enough interest to cover costs so Orange would have been unlikely to pick it for LLU but that's no guarantee.
If you can upload at over 288kbps then you're on ADSL Max which is a different story. Try running a speedtest at:
http://speedtester.BT.com/
Being able to run the test means you're not on LLU and also will provide you with your profile, a dynamic cap the system automatically applies to all ADSL Max lines to retain stability.
You mention an attainable of 4736, this is if conditions are perfect, you never actually get that speed. You'll probably sync at 400-500 lower, which then gives a maximum 3500 profile. Stability problems could easily reduce this further down to the 2 meg that you're experiencing.

That brings me to the main point then, why is my internet going on then off
The @ light is still, i can get online for a time.....then it starts flashing and i can not get online, and this process repeats several times a day or MORE, but only in the past few days.

And also, their "up to 8meg" statement...who exactly is going to ever be able to get 8Meg when you have to basically BE the exchange to get it or live right next door

Especially when, for ADSL Max, the profile system limits connections to 7.15 meg at best no matter how close to the exchange you are.
As for the @ light flashing, that's a disconnect. Check your setup and internal wiring first, if that's all ok then you'll need to contact Orange for it to be investigated.

Well i fixed it personally....no help from Orange.
I also called and got them to check the line, we are getting 2meg on an up to 8meg service....and apparently we can get 4.5meg....so i told them and they fixed the contract and i am now getting 4.5, not 2....
Not amazing..but good enough.
How long will it take to transfer the speed from 2 to 4.5?
