I have an ongoing problem with my livebox, slow speeds and no Talk service. Today I was told that there is fault on the line and that the Talk service will not work at slow speeds, I was told the minimum connection speed needs to be 1Meg, I am getting 0.5Meg at the moment. This is the first time I have heard about this, is it true or just another Orange fob-off to keep you waiting.
The talk service runs over the broadband connection so there will be a limit at which below it either won't work or just be very poor.
From what I know it "should" work on 1/2 meg but just may not be all that good. Running at 1 meg is probably more like the recommended minimum so there's bandwidth to spare and general internet use should be able to go on at the same time without too much problem.
The fault I have with my livebox, or should that be deadbox, is that there is no dial tone. From what I've read on this site this is a hardware issue and a new livebox is required to fix this. However because the light display on the livebox is correct those (insert your own comment here) at Orange will not even listen to my request for a new box and say it is all down to my speed problems. Co-incidentally these speed problems over started after I had downloaded some data using bit-torrent. My suspicions are that Orange have capped my line but they won't admit to this either.
The talk service occupies about 80kbits of the available downstream bandwidth which equates to around the standard 8 kilobytes used on standard telephony networks. Providing there is no heavy use of the internet by your own computor I would have thought that anything in excess of 100kbits would be acceptable. However, as the same 80kbits bandwidth is also required on the upstream path this needs to also be sufficient for the talk service to work properly
Thanks for the reply, however I don't get a dial tone even when I am not surfing the Internet. The guy at the call centre did say that if I was connected at 1Meg then I would only be able to use either the Talk service or the Internet but not both together. To use both I would need to connect at 2Meg.
