2 days ago I had a fault on my BT line and a lot of noise on the line. BT came today and fixed it, now its clean as a whistle and Orange is connecting between 7.6Mbps and 8.1Mbps again. It wasn't until I tried to download a largish file that I realised my download speed is around 16KB/s and sometimes as low as 10.5KB/s. I phoned the indian call centre and they told me to reinstall my speedtouch modem (dont use livebox) and plug directly into the main BT box (which I do anyway). Of course it made no difference and then they said that because of their great offer of unlimited broadband at £19.99 per month that the speeds had been affected and engineers have been working since mid june to resolve the issue.
I said it isn't an ongoing issue for me, I live in Plymouth and unlike many members here I have experienced download speeds of more than 440KB/s even at peak times up until today. It is stuck at 16KB/s max, doesn't alter from that regardless of website, server or time of day. Also my upload speed has gone from 41KB/s to around 15KB/s. If they dont fix it real soon I will want to see heads on sticks.
Has anyone else had the issue of great connection speeds but crap download speeds?
It's probably down to ADSL Max. Go to the link below and run a speedtest.
http://speedtester.BT.com/
It'll probably show a very low profile.
What happens is the fault caused problems for the broadband connection so the system reduced the profile in order to try and keep it connected. When the problem goes it doesn't immediately increase the profile because it it came back a yoyo effect would be equally as bad as no connection. So it waits for the connection to show a length of stability, thats normally 3 days.
Your speed should go back up by itself so long as it's stable for 3 days.
On that link when I enter my phone number and click go it says Error. Raise the issue with your ISP if it persists.
Anyway thanks for the info Elhana, can I ask how you know this? I really hope you are right. It's still the same speed at the moment but I'll keep a running commentary so those experiencing similar problem know what to expect.
Ok I finally managed to get the BT speed test to work. Here are the results:
Quote:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 7680 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 117 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
So it appears that although my connection is optimised at 7.6Mbps (although I connect at 8.1Mbps) the IP profile is set to just 135Kbps. Your assumptions are right Elhana, but how can I get this changed rather than wait? I'm gonna give the indians a call and see if they can increase the profile for me. Wish me luck....
I really wouldn't bother getting them to try changing that. It's only done through a line test/fault and it'll probably come back saying there's no problem as the system is working as expected. Plus there's always the possibility the fault could cause something to be done that isn't needed, like capping your line, although thats much less common on ADSL Max.
As I mentioned just wait and it should go back up again. This is the systems normal functionality and isn't a fault, though it can indicate a fault if it keeps happening.
I'm having the same problems - 1pm on a Thursday afternoon and I'm getting 287Kbps!
Had loads of problems a few months ago which thankfully got sorted when I was moved to a different node and have enjoyed an almost constant 4mb connection until the weekend when it slowly got worse. I think there has been a fair few disconnections so hopefully it's the profile kicking in and will get back up again in the next couple of days!
You really begin to appreciate a broadband connection when it's acting as a dialup one!
