I bought a Lexmark X4550 wireless printer, and am having a nightmare getting it to install wirelessly with the Livebox.
My inital question is - how can I make my printer work wirelessly using the Livebox (not using Liveprinter whatever that is, and not using a USB cable plugged into the Livebox itself)?
I followed all the printers installation instructions to the letter, disabling firewalls for good measure, but it has so far failed to install wirelessly despite hundreds of attempts and Three lengthy calls to Lexmark's 'helpdesk' in India. I've tried every trouble shooting method known to man, including changing EVERY channel on the livebox's admin pages. I am definitely typing in the correct WEP key as well.
The printer does work wth a USB cable plugged in, but that rather defeats the object of purchasing a wireless printer. Interestingly during the installation process the printer finds various wireless networks with various signal strengths, but mine just has a '?' underneath signal strength (weird considering the internet connection is fine and apparently has 'excellent strength'.
Anyway, Lexmark have now told me to ensure that 'Mac Filtering' is disabled on the Livebox and this should allow wireless installation. Magic I thought, that'll be easy. How wrong I was - I can't find a single mention of MAC filtering anywhere on the Livebox admin pages, or any sugestions of how I can disable it. Any ideas anyone?
With a lot of luck and much research on the internet I've managed to get to install the wireless printer to the livebox and its working!!!
It all seems to boil down to getting the printer port to point to the IP address 192.168.1.1. I uninstalled the printer completely, then followed the instructions below and then re-installed the printer as if doing so for the fisrt time. Miracle of miracles it actually worked first time and I can print from anywhere without any cables into the laptop or livebox. The instructions were:
Turn your livebox on and plug in your printer to the USB port on one of the sides. (Hint: it’s underneath the “1″ and “2″ buttons
Go to your networked computer (i.e. any computer you use to surf the internet through the livebox)
In your preferred web browser, go to “http://configuration.adsl” or “http://192.168.1.1″ depending on your configuration (try them both if one doesn’t work!)
Log in to the pages
On the homepage, you should see a table with “My Services” over it
Click “Change” next to the liveprinter
Enable it if it hasn’t already been enabled
Now go to Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes
Click “add a printer”
Click “Next” then Choose “A local computer” and untick “Automatically Detect P&P Devices”, Click Next
Choose “Create a new port”, and choose “Standard TCP/IP Port” from the drop down list
Click Next. In printer name, type “192.168.1.1″ and let the computer fill in
the field below. Click next.
In the next window choose “Generic Network Adapter” from the dropdown list
After that, select your printer driver, and click next
Fill in the details it wants, click next
Fill in the rest of the details, click Next
Click finish and you are done
Hope that helped some people
By the way, my printer was an Epson Stylus C64. This hasn’t been tried but seems
to work quite well.
I was going to suggest the MAC filtering or pairing system could be the cause. It's extremely easy to get around though.
Go through setting up the printer as the instructions say, entering the key where needed, paste it from the config if you can to make sure it's exact.
Just before the printer attempts to connect wirelessly press the 1 button on the livebox so the antenna light flashes. If you're not sure when that is press it every 5 minutes or so to keep the light flashing.
