Could anyone please tell me what the fair usage limit is?
I have run Orange and they say that it is "fair usage", the suggest
that I write to head office for more clarification.
Well I have just had my account closed, they sent me a letter saying that I have breached their fair usage ploicy, no warning or anything.
I paid £5 a month to get my unlimited connection, I have been with them 6 months and not found it too bad, I have had excellent download speeds 6.5mb+ with the occasional dropped connection which is a pain.
How much did I usage that month 115gb, yes a lot, but I do have 2 360's and various PC's. I am not moaning about the policy but it would be nice to have been informed at least once to say this is not within their limits.
Still they have made it nice and easy for me to move elsewhere, they even sent me my MAC code, I was going to ask them to reconsider but have decided against it.
I object to having a policy that you dont know the limit, can you imagine driving round in your car with no speed limits and then getting a fixed penalty notice saying you broke the speed limit.
Very unfair.
Generally once you get the message they're terminating the account there's no going back. There's simply no flexability to allow you to keep it.
Your anology is slightly off as they're not charging you for going over the limit, it's actually in the terms and conditions to allow them to charge for over usage though they've never used it. They'd probably have trouble trying to charge for over usage on the unlimited service without defining a specific limit.
What happened to you does not appear to comply with their stated policy:
Fair Use Policy for Broadband
If you're on either our unlimited or uncapped broadband service then our Fair Use Policy applies to you.
Why have one?
Well it's designed to make sure your broadband service is fast and reliable whenever you use it.
Some of our broadband customers use file sharing software and download large files like music and videos. This uses up lots of network capacity leaving less available for you. If they're doing this at peak times, it could mean that the speed of your broadband service will be affected.
Am I likely to be affected by the Fair Use Policy?
If you don't use file sharing software or download large files from the Internet it's unlikely you'll ever be affected by this policy. If you do, all we ask is that you do so considerately, perhaps by downloading outside the peak hours of 6pm to 11pm.
What will happen if my use is very high?
If you only occasionally have very high usage, we're unlikely to be concerned unless it becomes a regular occurrence. If this does happen then we'll get in touch to help you find ways to reduce your usage.
If your usage continues to be very high, we'll get in touch again. Ultimately, if your usage still remains excessive despite our attempts to help you reduce it, we may have to suspend your service and possibly close your account.
We don't want to do that, and with your support and goodwill we'll work with you to see if we can avoid this happening.
Their limit is 40gb and i was kicked off exactly the same with no warning just got a bag in an envelope with a letter that said as you are no longer a customer please return your livebox!
I am now with BE and their service is incredible and their customer service team are brilliant
The thing that really pisses me off is that I know I am a heavy user, which is why I look for the unlimited account, I used to be with NTL, they had a fair usage policy, I never bothered about it and never got closed. I moved from them when they changed it to 40gb allowance.
To some of you that may sound loads, but I dont think it is if you are in a connected world. I have just downloaded the E3 press conferences it is going to be about 2.5Gb for a 70min video (it's in 7 parts) Thats on 1 console, Microsoft are rolling out their Video Rental on line very shortly, these are going to be full length feature films, how big are these going to be well if its a DVD sized file thats 4.5Gb, so thats 9 films you can download, what about internet radio, online gaming, legitimate music downloads, the BBC have a service where you can watch any program that has been broadcast over the last 7 days, Sky are leeting you download movies.
Yes its a lot for one person, but in the majority of households they arent one person, you could be looking at 3 or 4 people, so 4 people means 2 films a month each, now the 40Gb limit doesnt look so attractive.
These ISP's really need to look at the growth of on-line content and get real, I will pay for an unlimited account but let unlimited mean unlimited.
I have been on the net since 95, I havwe always been lucky with my ISP's but Orange you have got it wrong, you are definately the worst of the bunch.
I agree with you Gnats. Orange seems to think that majority users only use the net for a few emails and surfing the odd website here and there. As you have pointed out, in your scenario (and numerous others) this is hardly the case.
The reality is that broadband has become a large part of ones entertainment/necessity in life. It will be interesting to see how Orange deals with its "fair use policy" once their reported new services at the end of the year start. 40-50 limit is going to be inadequate, this more so when High definition content becomes the norm.
The usage of 'Unlimited' broadband speed beggars belief. Its just one of the many bulls**t aspects of Orange.
May it continue to languish at the bottom of the ISP foodchain.
Lol, had a letter this morning from Orange, stating that I had downloaded 47.25gb between April and May 2007, and that if I didn't reduce that significantly my account would be closed...
Having this letter has really annoyed me, I have been with Orange since December 2006, upon signing up to the 'unlimited' package, I was aware that unlimited doesn't actually mean unlimited, so before signing up I specifically told Orange that I would be downloading approx 50gb per month, and asked them whether said amount each month would be ok, the answer I got 'yes, 50gb would be fine'.
So I just called Orange Customer Support to enquire what the hell the letter was about, upon getting through to a girl in India, she explained that it wasn't a threat, but it was more of a reminder not to exceed the 50gb limit, I believe she was only telling me this as she could tell I wasn't happy recieving the letter, but as I explained to the Orange girl, instead of Orange bitching about their users exceeding FUP limits, why don't they give their users network usage info so they can keep an eye on their own usage, because at present, we are all flying blind.
Well against my better judgement I decided to go with BT, as the other options available all had some form of fair usage policy.
I wasn't expecting a great deal but they seemed to be the best of the bunch, Pipex do not support newsgroups, if you sign up with them then you will get approx a 1mb download speed when accessing newsgroups.
Because of my low expectations I must say I have been very satisfied with BT, I got thier BT Broadband box (which looks even sexier in black) the quality of the phone line its a lot better then Orange (and you get a proper number unlike Orange 0845)
And more importantly the Broadband connection is better, I dont get the regular intermittant dropping of connection that I used to get, my download speed doesnt fluctuate during the day it averages about 7600k mark.
And Unlimited means unlimited, so thank you BT
I got a nice letter in the post TODAY ( AUGUST ) which made me giggle!
In MAY I downloaded 126.875Gig of whatever!!!
I signed up to "Unlimited" & I get patronised with this rubbish! Why not credit my account with the cost of a stamp & Email me & save the money to pay real live english speaking people to help explain the full product description?
. . . anyway . . . if I go over the limit & I get cut off does that mean that I am no longer tied into a 12 month contract?
I got my letter stating that I'd gone over 40gb today so have asked for a MAC code.
After explaining to the Indian lady that I was fed up that I'd had 3 weeks of being told that there was a problem with my line and then when I told them that I was able to connect using my old USB modem and got a new 'Livebox' sent, which worked but no contact from them about it or apologies for telling me a load of rubbish and that I was paying £27.99 for a lesser service than new customers got for £19.99 and that their fair usage policy said nothing about 40 gb but only asked me to use it off peak - then and only then did I get through to a snotty girl who started telling me that the problem with my line was still being investigated and refused to hear that she was wrong - They've promised me a MAC code by post in 5 days ..well we'll see. I know the way to Rotherham and I have a tent and sleeping bag.
I have lerned to deeply hate Orange and hope they go bust very soon.
I gather Be is good, can anyone tell me if this is true.
Got my "you are using 45GB per month stop or else" letter today.
Theyre just overwhelmed.
They have sent out all these amazing offers like the laptop and so on, raking in LOADS of new customers and now their lines cant handle the traffic they have brought on to it, so theyre trying to scare us into using it less, so they dont have to upgrade their systems!
It isnt exactly a threat! so what, i wont get disconnections, slow speeds and crappy customer services anymore...cancel my contract, it will be a good reason to get the contract out of the way so i dont have to stay on another 12 months.
Someone up there made a good point.
My main usage of the 45GB will be online gaming such as Battlefield 2, and i occasionally download a movie to burn to a DVD if there is nothing on TV that night....i dont use this much during college time, it is only the fact that i have more free time in summer so use it more.
Orange can shove their petty threats, they arent the only, and certainly arent the BEST broadband supplier out there.
Yes, they'll probably lose more customers by doing this than they're gaining from the laptop offers.......go on Orange.....slit a second artery while you're haemorrhaging through the first !
