Hey, I'm from Canada so I've never seen any of this 'Orange' or 'Wanadoo' junk before, I'm doing a house exchange with some family in France. I just need a little help finding my way around this. Considering that I recognized this entire system as crap from the moment I saw it, I figured this was a good place to go.
I just need to figure out how to connect this Wanadoo eXtense box to my laptop, and how to dodge the totalitarian parental controls the mom has(detail would help because I totally dont speech french).
Basically these guys have phone line to this 'Wanadoo' box(ADSL), and then firewire to their PC. I would just connect the firewire to my laptop, except from the looks of it there's a lot of software installed. My laptop is running Vista Ultimate, and these guys have some form of XP.
Oh and btw, yes, this thing DOES suck compared to pretty much everything else I've used.
Ok, are you sure it's a firewire connection? It's very uncommon if it is.
Next does it have more than 1 port or is it just a single PC device?
Multiple then you should be able to connect up (possibly just needing drivers which could be a whole other issue on Vista depending on what device it is), parental control stuff shouldn't matter as usually that stuff is limited to software on the PC rather than in the device.
I had a browse for eXtense, looks like a package rather than device, mentions of all the normal USB modems provided over the years along with a couple of ones that never made it over here. If it is one of these then you'll only be able to connect one computer at once which may cause problems if they want to use it as well.
Yeah, I'm certain this thing is firewire, and it only has one port but thats fine, I only really need it on my laptop.
But the problem is that the way this thing is set up(and like I said I've never seen anything like it before) you need to have some sort of Wanadoo program running to even use it. This program acts like a sort of pre-browser, you gotta launch it then press "Connect" on this program to use the web, and if I close the program the internet stops working.
I have no idea why anyone would want to encorperate such a moronic feature into a internet service but is there any way around it? Even just plugging my CPU into the phone line direct?
Ahh that sounds a little more familiar. Sounds a lot like some US style PPPoE connection systems, though I'm not overly familiar with them.
You'd need a built in modem or another external one to be able to connect without that box. Unfortuantly that connection software is probably a requirement as it controls that modem directly over firewire.
You'd really need to read the french site to find out more info and it it can be setup manually, always a possibility.
In any case, I'm pretty sure I do have an internal modem, why else would the laptop have a jack for a phone line? 'Sides, this thing's a beast. Would I be able to connect without that software if I bypassed the modem?
Also, if I could somehow get my hands on an ethernet cable, could I connect my computer directly to the french people's desktop and get internet that way? (Doesnt help that everything about this computer's in french)

Guaranteed to be the wrong type of modem. I've never heard of a laptop with an internal ADSL modem, what you'll have is a dialup modem. They not interchangable. Besides laptops are generally mobile computers and ADSL is static so it would be a very narrow market.

You will require an external box. There are alternate cards for mobile data access but for home broadband, unless you get a direct ethernet connection or a hardwired modem in your home, then you'll need a box

Yes you could but you'd need to setup the PC for sharing the connection and it would have to be on for you to access it. Also it would need to be running the software for the connection as well.
It would be worth searching the french Orange help site to see if there is a manual method alternative to the software etc.
