My ADSL availability test on the BT Wholesale website says that I currently receive up to 2mb but can receive a maximum of between 6mb and 8mb.
So what do I do now? As I am paying for the 8mb unlimited/max service with Orange.
I'd love to get out of my contract, but I'm still on a 12 month contract that started last month (had to start again....apparently) but they have promised 6 months free. Which doesn't make up for the crappy speeds!
I complained back to them in May after getting ridculous speeds and surprise, surprise they did something and I was getting speeds of 1800+ every evening and at weekends
Now yesterday and tonight lucky if I get over 400kbs (ave 200kbs).... any idea what's going on?
Also before I was under the impression (see previous thread) that I was getting potentially 6mb but my router now tells me the following:-
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 2272 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 9 db
Upstream Margin: 26 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 43
Upstream Line Attenuation: 24
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
Hopefully someone can enlighten me as to what's happened here as well.
Finally I saw something about it saying it could depend on the IP address assigned - at the moment mine starts with 91.104........ and that IP's with starting with 80.etc are running better - any idea how to change this?
Cheers
WJUK
ps - Checked on BT Wholesale site as I saw this site mentioned and they say I can only get 2mb possibly 4mb even tho the figures from my router on my previous thread say different.

FIXED SPEED:
Downstream Upstream
Rate (kbps) 2272 288
These stats would indicate to me that you are on a fixed 2mb line, so your speed will not increase above 2.
Not very good if you are on an up to 8mb service. Could be worse some are on 608 which is about 0.5 mb.
For the reason you will have to ask Orange. Until you ask for a MAC code they will not take the cap off. They will probably say they have done it to make connection more stable.

Cheers Keith - that's what I thought.
I'm puzzled why they did this as back in May it was definitely 6500+ (figures below from old thread).
DSL Status: UP
DSL Modulation Mode: GDMT
DSL Path Mode: FAST
Downstream Rate: 6528 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 288 Kbps
Downstream Margin: 6 db
Upstream Margin: 31 db
Downstream Line Attenuation: 44
Upstream Line Attenuation: 23
Downstream Transmit Power: 0
Upstream Transmit Power: 0
I'll check it tomorrow in the day sometime as like most users it's definitely quicker then.
You can type your phone number on BT Wholesale and it will tell you if you have been capped.
This is a trace from the thinkboadband server to my computer ,it is fine till it reaches the Orange side of things.
Traceroute is a useful tool for diagnosing network problems. It will show you how information gets from the thinkbroadband.com servers to your computer, and try to show the response time of each device along the route.
Some routers will occasionally show poor response times. This is because if a router is busy doing things such as routing traffic, or updating its routing data, it will put preference to this rather than respond to non-critical network tests.
Speed now on 2mb service ate 03/07/07 10:47:05
Speed Down 538.10 Kbps ( 0.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 172.21 Kbps ( 0.2 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk
Yeah definitely looks like it's been locked down to 2 meg. It was probably in response to a fault that was put through around then.
Popped home lunchtime and did a Speedtest and was getting about 1meg. This is weird since I was getting 1.8mbs no problem in the daytime back in April.
Spoke to Tech Support in UK and they pretty much were clueless too, said they were experiencing loads of speed problems and just to keep an eye on it basically.
She said she couldn't see a cap on my account just that my account was fine - in fact I think she said she couldn't see the speeds.
She also said my migration to LLU was completed on the 28th May 2007 . Wot should I do next?
Following on from the deadlines others were told over the phone about 20th June, then end of month, I have been told that "Orange are working to correct some faults" by July 12th. My speed has been 0.1mb for at least 6 weeks. Im paying for 8mb so am keeping a record of all this but has anyone actually had their speeds increased yet or have they also been told July 12th?
I have recently cancelled Orange broadband to take up a similar free package with Sky with Orange is was getting download speeds of between 1 and 6 kb which is 10* slower than dial up, orange blamed it on BT then they blamed it on Sky Box interfering with the connection, so why had my 2 neighbours had the same speeds.
I now have no problems with Sky and am getting download speeds exactly as they quoted so its not a BT or Sky box problem??
What a surprise??
Well all better now and I reccommend Sky Broadband for good customer service and good quality broadband

I do wonder if they actually meant July 12th of this year. Haven't we heard that one before? Since early spring this year many people have been given all sorts of lame excuses, deadlines, crap of " our engineers are working blah, blah"
