I have been having the most horrendous problems and from what I can see you all have too.
My problem started months ago when I was unable to see more than an inch of the Orange home page, the icon just kept on turning. I went on my old PC and that was the same.
Emails were coming in but outgoing were stalling on both machines.
So I figured that Orange had problems and waited a day or two before telephoning.
When I did, it was horrendous I could not hear nor could I understand the support person, I do have hearing problems so it was especially hard.
She got me to do a few things and I heard the word Java and I got my Internet back. As I use Outlook which they don't support she would not help with that.
I set up Outlook Express and telephoned again for help, and basically they gave me a new server the test email went out Ok so I thought all my problems were over I was soon to find out outgoing emails still would not transmitting immediately.
I got help from a XP form and after a few days someone pointed me to this site and after a great deal of worry and help I found out it was not my fault.
So you are asking what is it that you want help, well my laptop has to go away for repair and I have to use my pc, I can email in more or less the same way as with the laptop - hit and miss on sending BUT the problem with the Internet is still there the page will not download although Google does but I then can't move on from the Google page.
I spent ages yesterday speaking again to tech support and he set up a new Speedtouch something or other but it still did not work, he told me there was a fault on my line (but laptop works?) and not to make an outgoing call for 4 hours then to call them this morning - I have yet to do that. I did try to look at a web page last night after the 4 hours and the home page did almost load but not completely and I could go no further.
I thought I would ask this forum if anyone has anything similar before I 'phone the again.
At the end of the conversation yesterday, I was asked was that everything and I said 'well I would not mind getting the SMTP problem sorted as I knew there were hundreds of people who had problems', he just said 'it will be fixed by the end of the month'!!
Sorry this is an extremely long post but thought I should try to cover everything.
I should say the Laptop works under XP and the PC under Win98SE and I have broadband via a USB modem.

UNABLE TO ACCESS WEB PAGES - SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS
This appears to apply mainly to Win98SE.
The cause of this is incorrect network adapter Maximum Transmission Unit or MTU setting. You need to change the MTU setting on the computer using DRTCP.
If you can not access the site you will have to obtain the programme from a friend or at work. Once you have the programme double click on it to run.
First make a note of the current settings.
Fill in the programme settings as per the web pages above - SAVE - EXIT and reboot computer.
If you can not access the pages to see settings then they are as follows:
TCP Receive Window = First try 55600 with 1430 below. Then try 51048 with 1458. (RWIN)
Window Scaling = Yes
Time Stamping = No
Selective Acks = Yes
Dial Up (RAS) MTU = First try 1430 if no luck try 1458
Path MTU discovery = Yes
Black hole detection = default
MAx duplicate Acks = 2
TTL = 64
If you are using a USB modem put the MTU value in Dial Up (RAS) MTU
If you are using a network card to connect to router put the MTU value as follows. Select your Ethernet Card (NIC) under Adapter Settings and enter there.
If you are using a wireless connection select your wireless adapter under Adapter Settings and enter there.
Once you can access webpages go to pages above to calculate your best RWIN depending on the speed of your connection. You can also optimise the settings at: http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

Keith
Thank you very much indeed for the instructions.
I cannot access the program from the desk top PC but I have held back in sending the laptop away so I can try and get the PC operational again. I will be able to download the program and transfer to the PC, I shall print out your instructions and hopefully I will then have Internet access whilst the Laptop is away for repair.
BTW would you have any idea if the program will fit on a cd as this is the only means of transferring to the PC it does not have an Ethernet port.
I have just purchased a Pen drive to take off data from the laptop prior to repair but I am not sure if I could use this on the PC as it does not have USB 2.0.
Thank you again, it's a bit hard trying to solve computer issues along with the ones that Orange inflict on us, especially when you are not exactly Computer savvy.
Thanks again, I will let you know how it all works out.
Ive uploaded the file for you to download from here just right click the following link save as and download DRTCP
WOW, so clever, thank you I have it. Will try put it on the PC tomorrow and keep everything crossed that I can follow instructions, I have read everything through so should be OK.
