I changed provider on 11 June (as in, my new provider started providing my BB from that date). I duly cancelled my Orange direct debit.
I got an email from them two days later, automatically generated, saying that my bank account details seem to have changed and could I update them. I ignored this email.
Later in the week my wife took a call from a rather rude person, claiming to be from Orange, asking to speak to me (the account holder). She tried to explain that we're no longer with Orange but he (rudely) pointed out that he could only discuss this with the account holder (me). She gave him my work number but I never received a call.
Today I received a call at work from someone claiming to be from Orange. She even had the cheek to ask me to confirm my address!! I appreciate she has to make sure who she's talking to but she ought to remember that it's her that rung me - and start off by apologising for what sounds like a very stupid request. Especially bearing in mind that one should never disclose personal details to an unsolicited caller - such as this.
I refused to give my address but offered to ring her back on a number that was advertised on the Orange website. Any number, I would look up their contact numbers and ring her back on one of them. Surely one of those numbers has an operator who could put me through to her??
Anyway, she misunderstood and thought I meant I would update my account details on the site, which she eagerly explained I could do. I told her I wasn't going to renew my direct debit (I hadn't explained I was no longer a customer - I was enjoying myself!)
At that point I think she remembered she hadn't confirmed who I was and told me she was unable to continue without me confirming my address. Again I refused. We agreed to finish the call.
Anyway, curiosity consumed me so I looked up my Orange account. These are the details:
**************************************************
Total for this period £ 0.000
Previous Balance : £ 17.990
Payment received with thanks on 25/05/2007 - £ 17.990
Payment outstanding £ 0.000
Total to be automatically collected on 25/06/2007: £ 0.000
**************************************************
Which is exactly what I'd expect to see - that nothing is due. So they've been ringing me up and sending me emails because they can't collect a DD of zero pounds, zero pence!
The future might be bright, but their staff (or in fairness, their accounting procedures) definitely aren't!
Footnote - I suppose it's not impossible that they actually intend on refunding me the part of the month that is due (11 June to 24 June I suppose). In light of my experiences with Orange I find this inconceivable and would rather not receive this (about £8 I think?) than risk them taking more money from my account. If they really want to pay it to me then they can send me a cheque - they have my postal address.

Wouldn't hold your breath on receiving a part month refund. When I changed isp in March I was owed about a week and a half which I requested be paid. Unsurprisingly I have never received it and it would cost me more in phone calls chasing it up than what was owed, they really are dirty robbing b******. I'm just putting it down to experience and doing my best to dissuade anyone I know from ever using any 'service' orange 'provide'. I've even convnced a few people to cancel BB and phones with the w*******
